If this wasn't instilled in my mind, I could have hurt someone. Shooting a bad triggered Remmy for the first time... locked the bolt and and round fired. Haunts me to this day, but cements the fact that it is our responsibility to be diligent and cautious with every move. A split second could make or break you. Thanks for posting this OP, I'll never forget.

All to well reminder ... I check before I clean before I assemble, after, before it is stored, and when I take it out, and before I use or hand it over 99.9 percent of the time stops the issue

I had the same thing happen at a Boy Scout outing. I had checked all of the .22's at the firing line twice my assistant checked them I then carried them to the vehicle for loading and upon checking the a fourth time found a round in a tube magazine pump! Scared the crap out of me and I shared the story with the boys.

Years ago, I used to work at a gun store in North Carolina...there was a beautiful S&W 586 in the case that I loved to pull out of the case and "play" with. Long story short, after I bought it, one day I had it out "playing" with it...cocking it, and riding the hammer down a few times when it dawned on me that this was no longer an "empty" gun for sale that I had taken out to look at...it was a fully loaded .357 magnum that I was cycling. I carefully rode the hammer home and returned it to it's holster.

It taught me a VERY valuable lesson. Never get too comfortable around firearms, and to ALWAYS, no matter the situation, treat EVERY gun as if it were loaded.

Can NEVER be a reminder too often...

Guns are ALWAYS loaded... even when they are checked and empty...

They ARE still loaded.

I was raised by my grandfather, who's mantra was "there's nothing more useless than an unloaded gun". This meant that if he handed you a weapon it was loaded, cocked, and ready to rock.

To this day I don't even have to think about treating a firearm like its loaded, because the mental and physical repititions that he drilled into me are muscle memoried to the core.

Then how do I clean them?

Why you disassemble them of course!

As others have said, don't point at self or others. Treat the gun as loaded until you remove the action/bolt/etc or disassemble it for cleaning. Even then, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

My buddy gave me a 22 rifle that needed gunsmith work, somebody had a visit from the good idea fairy and hacked this thing up. It was missing the bolt handle from wear and tear and probably abuse and he swore it was empty. I checked it to be clear as i always do and out popped a round. He was just about to check the trigger before i took it from him to make sure.

Had the same lesson with the boy last week. Tube fed mag. I said to put back together and check it again. Yup, stuck round. Great lesson.

Glad nothing bad happened! Great reminder to everyone. I know someone who rolls her eyes at me for being so obsessed with safety. "You just checked that gun! Why are you doing it again?" I told her it's like when you're crossing a street or stopped at an intersection. You always look both ways and then check again. Even if you "know" there's no one around. You can never be too careful AND you want to engrain that habit. Always.

I just don't clean my guns, so I don't have this problem. I only use them at the range

With tube feds, sometimes a round will get stuck in the lifter. It's a good idea to empty the tube first THEN cycle the action several times to make sure all rounds are out.

As far as some of the other stories - working on guns with loaded mags/ammo around is just asking for trouble. A little inattention and BLAMMO!
