    Almost blew it.."unloaded" gun

I was cleaning a older Winchester .22 bolt action tube fed.

I had cycled the round out and poured the others out the loading tube. Cycled action a few times, all clear and went about cleaning the gun.

I put the loading tube back in, slid bolt back in place. Was about put the "empty" gun away'

Cycled the bolt again and saw a round chamber! I think one got hung up in the tube and when put back together it broke free.

Just telling on myself as I was sure the gun was clear and once again good reason always treat a firearm as loaded.

Been shooting close to 40 years so just shows can happen to anyone.

Can NEVER be a reminder too often...

Guns are ALWAYS loaded... even when they are checked and empty...

    They ARE still loaded.

I've fired gun that I thought were unloaded. I had miscounted rounds fired when someone else was shooting it first.

Better to see something unexpected than to hear something unexpected.

I've got a few tight match chambers that will hold a round despite working the action a few times. Check and double check.

you got off easy. helping my friend clear a "stuck case" that happened at the range several days prior.. asked 3 times if he was sure it was an empty case, proceed to place butt on ground, stomp charging handle open (mallet didnt work) and out poped a live cartridge.

Dont point barrel at self or others. Dont pull down on trigger unless pointed downward. Just always be aware of where you're pointing the gun.

Exactly, just treat it like you normally would even though you're cleaning it. That's how you avoid those "gun cleaning accidents".

I was getting help from the owner of a suppressor company with taking apart the suppressor he designed for my dad. The guy is starting to take the gun apart and sticks a mag in the gun with the bolt back. Then drops the bolt on a full mag, and then drops the mag again and sets it on the table.

Then he starts messing with the gun again (I saw him chamber the round but wasn't sure what he was doing, so I didn't say anything). He turned the gun around, facing his chest and looks at something. I asked "you know you have one in the tube, right?"

He was confused and then shocked. Total brain fart.

It happens. This guy makes very expensive titanium suppressors and has been doing it forever.

Always point the gun in the safest direction possible!

Tube feds make me slightly worry for this exact reason.
I heard a story about someone clearing theirs but it apparently it had a weak/broken spring or a hung up follower.
They thought it was unloaded but then they pointed it up in the air and worked the action again, well gravity caused the round to fall and be in position to be loaded.
                              No bueno.

I always do extra extra racking and chamber checking on a tube fed.
