I was picking up my KLR650 from OTD Cyclesports in Oakland last year, chatting up the sales guy while my bike was getting prepped, and I spied four 9mm slugs on his desk. He'd found them that morning while sweeping up the lot. Three were slightly deformed and one looked pristine, even though it'd come down on an asphalt parking lot...
According to the guy, it was a routine occurence, finding bullets in the parking lot in the morning, in Oakland.Comment

I've shot a shotgun into the air for the fourth. I used to do it out of tradition. I never had the money for those expensive M-80s or arials... I just cut the shotgun shell, remove the BB's and shoot it in the air.... It is not the act of terrorism some of you city folk try to make it out to be.
Yes, it was illegal. Yes, it was stupid. Yes, you should have called the cops and he should have been cited.
Does it warrant being put in jail and being labeled a terrorist? That depends on the circumstances; it is not as dangerous as many would think.
I would say that it is less dangerous than those idiots doing 65 in a 35 on motorcycles.Originally posted by Alan GuraThe Second Amendment now applies to state and local governments. ChibiPaw, I'm down in East Oakland sort of where the industrial area turns to residential. It's a lot quieter here than it used to be. There used to be a guy a few blocks away that would unload a clip almost every night 12 or 1 oclock. Ten rounds I would count them. There are very nasty neighborhoods north and south of me. Years ago, mid-day, a couple of guys put a shot across my bow when I was walking down the street. I stepped behind a phone pole for a minute, but it was just the one shot for fun and they moved on.you were there first when you told me about this at the Shoot N Que.
I've lived here in the bayarea for a long time, and I dont recalled steppig on or picking up bullets before. Do you live in the iron triangle or something? :P

Like you said it's depends on the circumstances. The circumstances are; I live in the city in a residential neighborhood with families. This guy was endangering other people. I know in the country this illegal act is no big deal, because of the wide open spaces. But, here in the city it is a big deal because people live close together and the probability of hitting somebody is great. With that in mind this guy deserves to go to jail.I've shot a shotgun into the air for the fourth. I used to do it out of tradition. I never had the money for those expensive M-80s or arials... In your physics class the professor must not have talked about taking into account drag from the liquid medium the bullet is moving through.all objects fall at 32ft per second.
Newton's law of physics.
All bullets will fall at the same speed after reaching apex. If you're hit can it kill you?
Felony = Bad News for Mr. Shotty
In conclusion,
Guess he shoulda figured it might be bad to do that. Hmm. True.
On a related side note, I wonder if he has any kids who will have to live with their dad being a felon.Last edited by PzKfW; 07-09-2008, 5:03 AM.sigpicComment

It all depends on the situation.
You removed the projectiles in an attempt to mimimize the danger to others.
Big difference there...
Riding a motorcycle faster than safety or sanity recommends usually only endangers the rider. Shooting a shotgun into the area within a residental area endangers anyone who happens to be outdoors and under the falling shot.
Of course, how likely is it that someone (like a child) would be looking up into the sky and might at the very least, lose an eye...
on the 4th of July...
with fireworks going off...
in the sky.

You did the right thing, <removed, unnecessary>
We had a little girl in my area get hit in the head this year... She lived though, thank god.Comment

I didn't read the whole thread, but I think if the neighbor threatens you & you are able to get a restraining order then that is a really good defense (exception?) for ccw, and you may be able to either get ccw or at least beat a charge if caught.
but you need a restraining order first.NRA Life MemberComment

I saw the mythbuster episode too.
However, it is all basic physics. If the shot is straight up into the air, there will come a point (at maximum height) when the bullet (or lead shot) is stationery. Then it falls, under gravity reaching a terminal velocity of, maybe 120 m.p.h. if it falls far enough (depends upon initial ballistics).
This is about 176 f.p.s. Fired from a gun at that speed and it would barely fall out of the barrel and wouldn't penetrate far. Lead shot would have even less pnetrative power. Certainly not enough power to do much damage, unless, maybe, it hit you in the eye. If I remember Mythbusters properly, their bullets landed in mud, and barely penetrated the surface, whereas a BB gun fired straight down penetrated about four times as far.
Fire it up at an initial angle, and you can add some forward velocity. How much depends upon the angle. I believe maximum artillery range is when fired up at 46 degrees, by which time the forward velocity has just about stopped. So, anything much above that angle should be pretty safe, I think (remember, artillery shells depend on exploding, rather than just hitting you, when they land.)
Anyone got any better figures?
EDIT:
Having said all that, I am emphatically NOT recommending that anyone fires a rifle or handgun up into the air. It is illegal and silly. However, I see no problems with shooting birds or clays with a shotgun, as long as there is reasonable clear ground behind the target.Last edited by Glock22Fan; 07-10-2008, 3:05 PM.John -- bitter gun owner.

I read that in Sac someplace recently that a girl had a bullet lodged in her head. Had a pic and everything. It din't say whether it fell to the ground from a shootout or was a careless person shooting in the air on the 4th.
