Interesting. Just today I was over at Sports Authority in Folsom, and noticed that they appear to have done away entirely with their guns/hunting department. Other than some odds and ends on a "clearance" display, no more firearms, airguns, ammo, optics, cases, etc. were in sight. The whole area has been rearranged, with some fishing stuff spread out to fill the empty space. Of course, there were no actual employees anywhere in the vicinity to ask about what had happened. I never purchased any firearms there, but have bought cleaning supplies, a couple of Daisy Red Ryders, a cheap-o Simmons rimfire scope, and some other things over the last few years. It's always a shame to see another store stop selling guns. Maybe they'll at least keep a really trimmed-down counter like the Wal-Mart over here, with a few scopes and some ammo...

Nothing bad happened. They simply weren't selling enough. Doesn't help that the district manager isn't a real pro-gun person either.

That's pretty much what I figured. In ~5 years of going in that store, I think I saw ONE person coming out with a gun.

If we're talking about the SA in Folsom, it would have prolly helped if they actually had someone back there to help customers out once in awhile.

Haha we have the same problem. The company only allows the payroll for 1 (ONE) employee in the entire outdoors department at a time. They expect them to price and put out merchandise/ stock the shelves/ recover the shelves/ do carry outs/ help customers with everything in outdoors and man the outdoors counter... all at the same time . Occasionally they get thrown on the register which really makes it lonely at the gun counter! 110% corporates fault. I fully agree though. Makes it hard to sell guns when no one is there to sell them There's not much of a markup on firearms either. It actually ends up being more of a loss selling firearms.

i was in a big 5 a few months ago. i was at the gun counter in Santa barbara only it was all air soft and bbguns. i asked what was up with that. Turned out the guy i was talking to was the District manager. His take was. As a company they are pro gun. However they are a sporting goods company. So some of the cities they are in refuse the sale of guns or ammo. So to comply with some of the cities to not make much noise they do not sell them. Kinda sad i remember the days when i used to go to big 5 to get shot for reloading shotgun.

I remember when the Big 5 on sunrise blvd had a good number of them, now nothing. The Big 5 in Roseville on douglas has some as does the Roseville Sports Authority by the Galleria mall but it's a VERY small selection. I quit going to those places and just go to Wild Sports.

WTF over! Sorry....no offence viper, but Big 5 does suck! If your looking for a good pair of shoes......check that....outdated and partly worn shoes and over priced sporting goods this is the place for you to get! Nothing like getting factory seconds, cheap merchandise and over priced sporting goods with out the courtesy of a reach around!

From my experience most large sporting good stores sell firearms. Sports Chalet is the only large sporting goods store in the area that doesn't sell firearms.

Sports Authority (formerly known as Sportmart) doesn't sell guns either.

The Big 5 in Santa Barbara got audited at the same time Far West, Dodge City and Goleta Gun and supply got hit (all at the same time). Big 5 stopped because they could not keep up with the paper work and it was not in order. Dodge City lost their FFL, and so now we have 2-gunshops.

The City here wants these shops out in a big way.
