Bully for your dad. I bet that APC is shared with every other agency in the county. And getting a run out military armored vehicle for virtually free is a whole helluva lot cheaper than buy a new Bearcat. So it sounds like that department was actually being pretty smart with their money.

It is common knowledge that LAPD put at least five people in the hospital during the Dorner manhunt... There are pictures in this thread of some of the pickup trucks they shot full of holes along with links to the articles about what they did... They shot two women in the back while they were delivering newspapers. I am NOT going to dig up sources just so you can have the satisfaction of having wasted my time.

Also, no it is not shared with every agency in the county... There are only three cities in the county with a population over 10,000 and none with a population of more than 20,000 people. Each of the cities with a population of more than 10,000 has its own M113... I have seen the M113s...

Hell, I called one of the PDs to ask them why they had to buy an M113 [they had not yet taken delivery of it at the time of my call, the newspaper said that they were still trying to find somebody with a flat-bed trailer to haul the damn thing into town so it wouldn't damage the road].

*correction- editing* when I asked them why they had to buy an M113 they explained the army gave it to them for free.

First they said [on the phone] that the thing was for the war on drugs, when I asked them how useful this would be in chasing down a drug dealer who is walking down the street, and when I asked them to mention the last time they had a situation that went bad because they didn't have such a vehicle, they said it was to keep kids safe if there was a school shooting.

I then asked if they were planning to crash such a vehicle into the school during a shooting incident and to explain how this would keep kids safe.

They finally said, "well *NAME OF TOWN* got one, why shouldn't we have one?" [name of town was the name of my dad's hometown]

I asked how they received training to operate the vehicle and they explained that the military was teaching their people how to operate the vehicle. I asked them how often they trained alongside the military and if they were planning to have soldiers accompany them on patrols with the vehicle. They said there were no immediate plans for such things.

I then asked if the vehicle was going to be armed with a machine gun. They said they had no immediate plans to mount a weapon on the vehicle.

I then asked when they were going to take delivery of the vehicle, they said as soon as they could find somebody with a truck capable of hauling it and a flat-bed trailer because they cannot drive it on the road.

I then asked if they thought it was wise to acquire a vehicle that they didn't have the means to transport and to acquire a vehicle that cannot be safely driven on the roads without risk of damaging the roads and how do they plan to use a vehicle that will damage the road to keep townspeople safe.

When they asked if I wanted to leave my name so the chief could call me to talk about it when he got out of a meeting, I declined and we ended the call.

So in a county with only about 100,000 spread across three cities and twenty or so towns/villages, the three cities each have their own M113 and I believe the county sheriff's department has their own M113 as well. I say that "I believe" because I have not personally been to the county sheriff's department and do not know with 100% certainty if they have their own M113 but I do know that the three cities each have their own M113.

      Well here's the connection...

An M113 is an armored personnel carrier made for WAR, used in WAR, deployed with soldiers who are participating in WAR.

If a city of 10,000 to 15,000 people had 800 murders in one year, say due to drug cartels, it might be appropriate to begin deploying M113 armored personnel vehicles into the city in question.

That's the connection between the murder rate and the police using armored personnel vehicles.

Sometimes BGs get away on boats, perhaps LEOs should be issued sharks with frickin lasers on their heads, make sure they have every tool they could possibly use over the course of 30 years.

What fun is that? You can't go out for a cruise on a shark.

You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!

How does a Sheriff get an official boat? I guess I could see for a bay, maybe. Is that jurisdictionally sound? I don't know too much about that stuff, but I'd think it'd cross to Coast Guard.

By the way, many M113s were and are used as armored ambulances.
APC's without mounted weapons function no differently than an armored car,
they just look scarier. Does that point sound familiar?

I have no idea, I think it was probably Homeland Security money. I really can't see a need for it but I have never really looked into it.

This about it this way, if some "normal" type of crime (meaning not in the protection of the countries waters) is committed in or near a marina/bay, does it seem like a good way to spend federal money to have coast guard personel and material to police those types of things? The individuals are going to go to the county facilities anyways, why not cut out the middle men and have the county enforce in those areas.

Many Sheriffs Departments have river patrols within the jurisdiction and Fish and Game patrol ocean waters near the shore to ensure commercial and recreational fisherman abide by state laws, it's essentially the same thing.
