Fumigation and Guns

Anybody has done house fumigation before? Are there any issues with guns, ammunitions, primers, gun safe or smokeless powders?

I'm curious too. They will be tenting for termites and they said I needed to open all cabinets and containers. I'm not excited about leaving my gun safe open for a week while they do their thing.

Biggest issue during fumigation seems to be thefts involved while the property is tented. Many believe these to be inside supported jobs, where an employee of the fumigation company tips off his buddies when and how it will be safe to go "under the tent", get what they want, and not die in the process.

Do a search, there is an active thread on thefts, rampant thefts, apparently the word gets out that the big circus tents mean easy peasy to thieves.

Some have suggested camping out in the yard. I would move firearms a week before the tent is scheduled to go up. Frankly, I can't take a week off work to watch my house, you have to be gone sometimes.

Ive only used the bug bombs from walmart/homedepot....so no actual fumigation, no problems from the 4 hr bombing...

Side note, when my house was getting tented I was out of town on a surf trip. My girlfriend was home and the inspector asked to inspect every room, closet, as well as all my cars in the garage and in their trunks. He said this was protocol to be sure there were no living beings hidden away.

When he saw my 18 gun safe in the closet he asked to see inside it. My girlfriend said, not only did she NOT have the combo, but even if she did, she wasn't going to let some random dood look in my safe.

Are the inspectors required to look inside the safe too? That seems crazy to me, there is NO WAY I'm letting some random guy look inside my safe.

The explanation is to open up gun safe to see if there are other things aside from guns that could be damage by the gas.

I am still planning of getting my guns out during the inspection.

I am also adding more cameras inside the home just to record any activities inside.

I used to be a licensed branch 3 inspector and did the exact thing your talking about. Its an inspectors job to make sure that no living beings are inside the house but all an inspector need do is tell the person to move all food and humans and pets, plants. If an inspector is checking every cabinet and box and closet, that inspector is an anal retentive OCD freak. He is going ABOVE and BEYOND his duties. But then again, it leaves no room for error.

I was a BR3 Field Rep when I was 19-22 years of age. I did a damn good job and would work with people. If I noticed termites in an "inaccessible" area, I would recommend a tent. I would show up a few days before the tent and drop off instructions and plastic bags so people could bag food. I would walk them through exactly what they needed to do. I never felt the need, nor was under any laws, to check every single closet and car for people. A simple walk through is sufficient.

Or he's working with thieves, and scouting out where all the goodies are to steal.

The guy that inspected my home never said about opening the safe during the fumigation process. Only open it during inspection. But I am still skeptical about it.

Yeah, I would move all your valuables out during the tenting. I've read about way too many thefts. I wouldn't want to risk it.

hmm.. he may have just wanted to spend "extra" time with my girlfriend. She's almost "too" friendly.

I have had to fumigate my house for termites. My gun safe didn't need to be left open, but they did want to look inside to ensure that no one was in it (not kidding). I too was worried about being the victim of theft, so I pitched a tent in the front yard. No one tried getting into the house, but ironically I did run off someone trying to break into my truck.
