    Magnets buttons

Is anyone familiar with the magnet button laws.
Someone told me that they had a magnet on the magazine release of their AR15, and law enforcement told him that having the magnet on the button, changes the magazine from a 'non-detachable' to a 'detachable' type, and that the gun know having a detachable magazine is considered an assault weapon. He also went as far as to claim that the simple addition of the magnet on the button, could carry 'manufacturing' charges.
This sounds scarey and my research so far has not found a difinitive penal code verbiage that addresses the magnets. It appears that if the magnet can be considered a 'tool' then the gun would then meet Calif complient standards and be legal. It all seems to hinge on the maget and weather it meets the definition of a 'tool'.
The DOJ said that they have not taken a difinitive stance on this issue.
Does anyone have experience with this situation, and does anyone know someone that was charged under these conditions but had them dropped by the DA?

c'mon, noob -- run a search. this question has been hashed out OVER and OVER and OVER, and the consensus is that they're illegal on a featured rifle in california.

Not worth the hassle to find out. Use a bullet on the button while they are still legal. That said I used a magnet button when I was out of state this summer. Cost $15 and fell off the first day. Not worth it in my opinion.

Welcome to Calguns Shadow12. Unfortunately the search feature here leaves a bit to be desired. May I suggest in the future you consider a Google search such as: Mag Magnet Calguns.net

Seriously, we want new gun owners to be of FRIENDS, not insult them for not using the search feature.

True; if you don't feel like being explicitly helpful, or don't have time, or it's Tuesday, kindly shake your head sadly and move on.

Shadow12, the person 'told you' a decent summary of the opinion here. Given the possible felony associated with manufacturing an 'assault weapon', the risk seems much higher than the benefit.

(And, posts are easier to read if you would add lines between paragraphs.)

Hmmm, it's puzzling that he's not interjected yet...

I'm thinking about asking a follow-up question about the legalities of using a magnet button AND Tannerite at the same time. That should do it.

lots of people stumble into message boards on their first day and start posting threads like "HAY GUISE HOW IS ASSAULT WEAPON FORMED K THX." (the OP is not nearly this heinous or thoughtless; i'm exaggerating for effect.) you know why they stop? because other people tell them to.

how is a rookie going to learn the rules if no one says anything? this isn't a me thing or a calguns thing; this is basic internet etiquette here -- new to a board? lurk and search, then search and lurk.

besides, if i was trying to be a jerk, i wouldn't have also given the answer.

shadow12, welcome to calguns. sorry for being snippy.
