But, a civilian can legally use a 50 round mag in most handguns in CA.
CSA is right, only problem now with possession is they're trying to use that "nuisance" code to take them from people, if you're found to be using them

A LEO can keep and "use" any "standard" capacity mags he acquired while a LEO after he retires, quits or is terminated as a LEO.....

The only exception is, if said LEO acquired the mags AFTER 12-31-2000 AND he were to take those mags out of state....Technically bringing them back into California would be a felony as according to the law importing those mags would still be illegal because they were acquired AFTER 12-31-2000, and the EX LEO no longer qualifies for the LEO exemption within the law.

32310 Calif Penal code.. Old section 12020 (a) (2) PC

32310. Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section
32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section
            17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, commencing January 1, 2000, any
person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured,
imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for
sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity magazine is
punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or
imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170.

            Section 32405.

Section 32310 does not apply to the sale to, lending to, transfer to, purchase by, receipt of, or importation into this state of, a large-capacity magazine by a sworn peace officer, as defined in Chapter 4.5 (commencing with Section 830) of Title 3 of Part 2, who is authorized to carry a firearm in the course and scope of that officer's duties.
