    OLL friendly Range in Eureka

Any body shoot their OLL AR at any of the ranges up in the Eureka area?

Since Redway is about a hour south, you could head up 299 into the Six Rivers National Forest and create your own range. Good luck and happy shooting..

With gas at $4.45 I was hopping for a range close to home.

The only range I know of near Eureka is what we used to call the "Simpson Range" just outside Blue Lake on 299. Every once in awhile when I come to town I see either LEOs using it, or a Black Powder Shoot going on. I do not who runs the range but I'd ask around the Black Powder Community. I'd bet somebody over at Buck Sports could give you some information on who runs the range. Just to warn you the last time I asked about OLLs they were very curt in responding they did want anything to do with them. In fact I haven't purchased anything from them since 1992 due to the "customer service". A better bet would be Pro Sports, in the past they would be willing to sell OLLs so may they maybe more willing to help, or the Old West Shootery.

          Good Luck...

I called Buck Sport yesterday and the guy didnt know what the 2 ranges around here thought of ARs. When I asked about 5.56 bulk ammo he gave me the price and I then asked about .223 ammo he said " I thought thats what you were asking about" I said no they are not the same, I have a 5.56 stamped barrel and could shoot both but you should not shoot 5.56 out of a .223. He had no clue. That said I would rather spend my money with them than Pro Sport any day.

No one ever bothered me at Redwood Gun Club, Green Diamond range, or next to the Ferndale bridge.

Talk to the guy at old west gun supply (I think that's the store name, I can't remember for sure.) You know, the indoor range in Eureka. Guy knows a lot about that kind of stuff.

I would say the samoa range is friendly towards OLL's though. I know some of the range masters there and they don't have any problems with them. I know I've shot my FAL, my PSL, and a rangemasters .50 BMG there on more than one occasion. (we replaced the gong we destroyed... it was on it's final legs anyways). However I rarely go on open range days, I usually go along with one of the rangemasters on a normally closed day.

Pro Sport is OLL friendly again, but dont stock anything. They will do FFL OLL transfers though.

Bucksport cites "too much grey area" and stays clear of anything OLL. they wont chase you out of the store, but they aint bringing out the drinks and donuts either.

Kevin at Old West Shootery (the indoor Range) got threatened by the DOJ that if the law changes in the future, he could be responsible for doing transfers and lose his license, so he doesent do them.
I happened to be in Pro Sports one afternoon and he was there talking to their employees. I heard alot of inside info, it was very interesting. Basically, he doesent want to risk his license for doing them. He is a great guy and agrees the AWB sucks.

Simspon range is kinda hard to get into. Best bet is to find a rangemaster and go with him. They are busy as hell during deer hunting season, but other than that, kinda slow. Lots of events there all during the year, black powder, cannon shoot, IPSC, etc, etc.
My friend works at simpson and talked to the guy about becoming a rangemaster. Think its gonna take a few weeks. I know you have to volunteer for range work a few weekends a year or something.

Somoa has events all the time, as well as some great service rifle shoots. My friend shoots in them (ex military), he never registered his ar when he had the chance but doesent sweat the hi cap mags and detach magazine release on his ar. Its not a banned model, but like I said, he never has bothered to put a bullet button on it.
In my opinion, nobody at the somoa range cares anyway. I asked a guy about shooting my rec 7 out there for a shoot and he said no problem, but make sure you bring a magazine that holds at least 15 so I could do the competition. I didnt ask anymore questions, but sounded good to me.

I suggest you stop by Grundmans in Rio Dell, Fred is a great guy and always a pleasure doing business with him. In Eureka, Pro Sport and Old West Shootery are alright. There is one I visited in Crescent City which I found interesting. Can not remember the name, but it is run by a elderly lady out of the bottom part of her house.

I will spend my money in most shops around here, but not Pro Sport. Serves stinks and way over priced. Buck sports if I have to have it now or online if not. I work with a guy that has a FFL so getting what I want is not a problem.
