What level CO are you? Every CO is a "peace officer" but most are not allowed to carry unless they are working. I have a buddy who works at Avenal and he needs a CCW to carry.

Hey guys, let's not derail this topic and turn it into a fight over "prison guards" vs. "real" peace officers. Or a prolonged discussion on "do correctional officers really get to carry on or off duty"? There are other threads on this board for that and there's plenty of bashing to be had in them.


The OP posted a legitimate concern over a situation which could apply to any LEO or peace officer. I, for one, am interested in the discussion on off-duty carry at public venues. Not on merits of the OP's particular badge.

there are only co's. all co's are peace officers. if your buddy at avenal needs a ccw, then hes not a c/o

Well congrats, now you know how EVERYONE else who isn't an LEO feels. Gangs pick on non-LEOs as well. Non-LEOs all got their own families they wish to protect also.

That's it in a nutshell.
And if you're truly worried about your safety and the safety of your family, why would you put yourself and them in that position? Weighing out a "green light" threat vs. disappointed kids? That's no decision at all.

Very well, by your own admission you don't carry your duty weapon while off-duty, therefore you aren't acting as a peace officer when off-duty. So as a private citizen you must obey CCW laws like a regular Joe.

BTW I'm not against your CCW in this case, I'm just against LEOs thinking they are a protected class above all citizens with regard to CCW.

Again- California's Correctional Officers ARE PEACE OFFICERS. Some people want to twist the view in their heads to fit their agenda.

Correctional Officers are also Peace Officers in Nevada as well.

i dont have a ccw permit. i never took the ccw class.

as a peace officer i can carry off duty. and my off duty gun holds 13 rounds. this doesnt mean im better than you.

i stated earlier, i hate the laws as much as the next patriot. its a bunch of BS.

but as a peace officer i will take advantage of what this state allows me. whatever their reasoning is....

Very good attitude. But it seems that some LEOs don't consider you to be a peace officer 24/7. And thus relegated you to the rank of ordinary joe, which is outrageous on two levels. One professionally since as you say you are a sworn officer, and two since all law-abiding citizens should be allowed to carry regardless of what their chosen profession is. Just another case of hypocrisy in this grand state.
