Ammo Shortage: What did we learn?

What shortage? My local gun store has had thousands of rounds the whole time. The only problem is they tripled the prices because all of the scared people would pay for it.

Yes, the ammo shortage in 2008 was BAD. I remember shelves completely empty, reloading supplies impossible to find, no ARs anywhere. It took a LONG time for things to calm down, I would say at least 1.5 years if I remember correctly before I could do something like walk into Walmart on any given day and buy some 9mm or .45... when it did calm down again, I stocked up BIG TIME... hence, the ammo scarcity in the past 7 months hasn't really affected me. Wait until prices come down and then stock up! Ammo will stay good indefinitely if you store it properly...

I disagree.. .22LR, 9mm and .223 are the three most popular cartridges in the U.S., are they not? Stands to reason they will always have the highest demand.

Keep in mind that demand increases with scarcity. People will feel the need to buy more just because it's not readily available. Human beings work that way in many ways.

The few odd people buying .40s now aren't going to sway the brozillions that already shoot 9/22/223.

True, but I doubt I'm the only one who noticed that .40 S&W was all that was on the shelves during the dark days of late 2012-early 2013.

Here is what I learned:

The whole idea of legions of suburbanites gathering ammo for their black rifles and spouting endless chatter about 'shtf' is a joke. It has more to do with clever marketing and post apocalyptic mental masturbation than it does with increasing survivability in some sort of major event.

I think it was about 7 months ago we found ourselves in the first ammo shortage in modern history (past 50 years or so).

Ummm... you weren't around in '08-'09 were ya?

Granted, it wasn't as bad as this time but it was pretty bad.

Some of us started panic buying then and didn't stop till this go round brought the profiteering douchebags out of the woodwork.

What did I learn? Buy it when ya can. Jump on deals whether ya need it or not. Ammo/powder/primers/bullets don't eat nothin' and they don't go bad.

One of the things that I have learned is that the ammo shortage is "NOT" over. It's only over when any Tom, Dick or Sally can walk into their local Walmart and pick up a few boxes of 22lr, a box of 9mm and a few boxes of .223. Then and only then is the Shortage over. So I learned nothing from this ammo shortage, but I did learn from the ammo shortage of "08" to stock up, A LOT!

I noticed too, and bought a bunch of .40 S&W even though I already had quite a bit. That and .357/38 spcl are the only two pistol rounds I shoot, so I thought I would stack deep on that.

given that the components of ammo doesn't go down in price, ammo at regular prices will almost always appreciate, even if only a small degree

a brick of .22LR is like gold, just heavier and more useful

I'm not sure what your point is OP, but this is definitely not the first ammo shortage of our lifetime.

Often repeated here and still true:
- Buy ammo by the case when prices are down ("Buy it cheap, stack it deep")
- Learn to reload

The day will come when we'll have to drive to Arizona to get ammo. Later you'll have to ask the government for permission.
