is it just my ffl that recorded the serial #'s on my receipt? i kept all the receipt also for new purchases since they had the serial #. guess i'll have to check ppt i did that didn't have the serial noted on the receipt.

no need to have anything fancy. type up on a word document, print, put in safe. you can store the same thing on a cloud somewhere. no need to have anything reflecting it's for a firearm if you store it up on the cloud somewhere (like google drive). you can even probably find a free text encryption.. keep a local copy of what is the equivalent and put only the ecrypted text online.

Protect your text by Decrypting any given text with a key that no one knows

I'm not a tin foil hatter but how else would you voluntarily get people to volunteer what they have. Create a convent database and wait. Ill stick with pen and paper thank you. How about posting pictures of every gun you have on Facebook.

I keep my records in an Excel spreadsheet. It's easy to sort them according to caliber, make, model, whether it's owned by my wife or myself. It just seemed like the natural thing to do. I can't imagine why someone would need to be led by the hand with a computer program of some kind unless they have absolutely no computer skills - in which case, they'd probably opt for pencil and paper. Print a hard copy, keep it in the safe. No, not the gun safe, the OTHER safe. If you're worried about getting hacked (seriously, a hacker that competent is going to be after other things than your gun inventory) then encrypt the document.

Stop using all that technobabble about "paper" and this "ink" thing. You expect us to get a physics degree to figure all this out?

I use My Home Pro for Android. It's $3.99 and lets you group your stuff by room and policy. Works great for all your other junk too.

Maybe the paper and pen route is for people like me and the software is for people with other skills.
Well, first I hope you all don't mind me jumping in -- I'm the developer of MyGunDB.

The issue with pen and paper is that it's harder to do some of the things MyGunDB can do like track ammo supply, range log, pre-load fields based on UPC codes, alert you when something is due for maintenance, etc -- sure it can be done, but oy! And unlike my handwriting, I'll at least I can read what I put into my database

Plus with the ability to do automatic backups, even to Dropbox if desired, it's added security in case something bad happens. I can show you my handwritten bound book so you can count the spilled coffee stains if you'd like

Everyone has to use whatever method they prefer, as long as they use something! Write it down, put it in an Excel file, email a list to yourself (and your spouse), whatever -- just make sure you have enough info for the insurance company to use in claims, and enough info for your family to know how to handle your collection in case the worst comes to pass. I hear all the time how records helped a family from getting ripped off when they had to dispose of a loved one's collection.

I bought the Android version and keep having trouble entering data. When I hit the backspace on my phone it inserts something in the field. Do you know what's going on with that? It's done that with two different phones and a Tablet.

I on the other hand have better things to do, besides I'm giving them away and or selling most all of them before a worst case scenario. I'm good!

not to mention having the proper lighting. ever take a pic of a lower with flash? s/n hard to read with the reflection especially if the surface is oiled.

from an insurance perspective, does it matter whether you have a serial or a piece of paper. last i talked to my insurnace agent, they prefer to have receipts or better, appraisal. the problem with (me) is that i put together my AR's . so it's receipts with 2 or 3 LPKs here, springs and other parts there, etc. so keep all the receipt too and have a spreadsheet that lists out the parts that went to each one. shareable stuff like bipods i put just in one and make a note.

buuuuut.. I do agree that it's necessary to keep photo documents and serial listings for a number of reasons however it can be a much more daunting task than mere seconds of time.

                        :

ultimately, this is the key to the thread. i recommend talking to your insurance agent also to see what their requirements are. myself, i'll have to note which receipts go to which build. kept all the emails.. printed all the emails too. but it is a paperwork nightmare.

best to do with a db equivalent is making tables with a db field for images of the receipts for each field. (yeah too techie there now). can be done with excel also or even word doc. that would match everything that cost you for that firearms with proof of receipts (where applicable).

Why not just open up a text document? That can be backed up to an infinite number of places, Email, flash drives, cds, dropbox, icloud, etc..

I use GunSafe which is not supported anymore. If you can find it, it's easy to use and has all the 'bells-n-whistles'. Works fine with Win7/8 too.

Oh? I'm supposed to pay a fee for something a pen, camera, text/word/excel/openoffice/freeware can do for free?

I know I'm not the only person in the world with a "Log Book" to track the shots fired/maintentance of my firearms.

I have the high tech version of write in the rain. Can your unsecure (hackable) software do that? Maybe if you have a new samsung galaxy 4 'sport' or whatever they call that water resistant one....

No thanks. Pics, text, scans of reciepts etc.... all burned on cd stored in multiple locations with all the data wiped off the pc if the pc is compromised. Also have some thumb drives with it hidden in the house.

Why would I leave this stuff on my computer????????????????

My CC info was stolen twice- why would I risk leaving this info on a computer?

                              Stupid, STUPID.... STUPID!!!!!!!

a paper notepad than can be destroyed if needed would be better than a hard drive than can be opened by the black helicopter guys who come to confiscate all the registered and non registered firearms
