I love these threads. So many people do not understand the difference between Federal proof of residency and State of California handgun proof of residency.

I have accepted a mortgage bill because I called the DOJ and asked and they said yes. You might want to ask the dealer if you can call the DOJ on the phone and get them to confirm it while you are at the store, would they accept the mortgage bill.

If not, then you need a government issued document with an expiration date or a hard wired utility bill with your name on it. Good luck.
www.tenpercentfirearms.com was open from 2005 until 2018. I now own Westside Arms.

Keep in mind that a mortgage statement in your name does NOT prove that you live there. Lots of people own homes and rent them out while they live in other states.

While I don't agree with the laws surrounding firearm purchases and such, I can at least tell you that that's certainly where they're coming from when they don't accept that as proof of residency.
My life may not be worth the mere firearms, but should it ever really come down to it, my life is worth the freedom. The only reason you and I have the freedom we have is because someone else put their life on the line, knowing that it's not just about the guns.
No one is free until everyone is free. If you champion your own rights, but won't stand up for the rights of others, you're no better than those who wish to take our rights away.

You don't have a cable or electric bill with your name on it?

He's paying mortgage, the bank holds the deed.

Also if you haven't undated your residency since the last time you renewed your registration or license (including if you have a brown change of address card, as it doesn't count at DoJ) then you can quickly hop over to the local DMV and get your DMV printout with your current address for 5 bucks. This counts as a second, government issued verification of residence.

No need to make things so difficult.

I always use my vehicle registration, since it's in the car all the time, anyway.

the guns stores are just as confused as we are unfortunately. They are trying to protect their FFL. too bad they don't have to take a class to keep them up to date, but I also hear that the DOJ does a poor job of communicating to the dealers. Suck on a lemon!

I understand that, thanks. Notice I did not say deed, I said "deed of trust". Yes, the lender holds legal title to the property, but the OP has what is called equitable title to the property. The deed of trust will have his name on it and is a good form of proof of residency.

I collect Military Arms and enjoy shooting in local matches. I also collect older Lever Actions, especially those chambered in odd/old cartridges. If you have a nice old Winchester or Marlin in 25-20, 32-40, 38-55, 40-60, 45-70, etc etc, please PM me and we can work out a deal.
