I have read a number of accounts from members whose safes were stolen or broken into. This product will notify you if your safe is moved or opened. http://www.libertysafe.com/accessory...-17-pg-85.html

Extra security for safe owners

I mounted sensors for my home alarm system to my safe. If I didn't have a home system, I'd be interested in this.

Interesting... Thanks Randy.Guns, dogs and home alarms. Opponents are all of a sudden advocates once their personal space is violated.

That product can be disabled by simply cutting the cable that is attached to the external antenna, or unplugging your wireless router. Liberty claims that the antenna is not needed in most cases but I'm calling BS on that since your safe acts as a Faraday Cage and I doubt this device violates the laws of physics. Bolt your safe down and get a quality monitored home alarm system (not ADT, they're junk) and you'll be better protected. Get this device if you want to monitor your safes temperature and humidity levels.
EDIT: The wavelength of 2.4Ghz (most common wifi frequency) is .125m or 4.92126", so you'd need a hole at least that big in your safe in order for this device to work without an external antenna.Last edited by JDay; 05-30-2013, 12:54 PM.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison

I'm not an RF engineer so take the following with a grain of salt. The device seems interesting but would be a no-go for me if it does indeed require the external antenna. What you say makes sense, but I wanted to test your theory out. That product can be disabled by simply cutting the cable that is attached to the external antenna, or unplugging your wireless router. I don't have one of these liberty devices, but I thought why not see if another wi-fi device would work in the safe? so I grabbed one of my old laptops and turned on the built in webcam. I then joined this laptop to a webex session and proceeded to close and lock the safe.
From another computer I joined the webex and was able to see not only the broadcasted video, but also send messages to the other laptop inside of the safe. When I reopened the safe all of the messages had arrived.
So in theory it does seem possible for a device to maintain wi-fi connectivity inside of the safe without an external antenna. My safe is on the opposite side of the house from the wifi router.
Anyways just wanted to point out from my little experiment here that it's possible that the liberty device would work without the antenna. But all kinds of other factors might come into play -- for example as a battery operated device is the wifi strength as strong as the one in my laptop? etc.
Heres the inside of my safe as seen from the wi-fi connected laptop and webcam. I kept a flashlight on to provide some light.

Meh, I've got a Liberty safe and I will stick with the 105 pound German Shepherd Dog. If I didn't have the dog, it might make sense.Comment

No, there is no cellular backup or GPS tracking.
Interesting. Is your safe bolted down? If not it's possible the signal is getting in/out through the pre-drilled holes.I'm not an RF engineer so take the following with a grain of salt. Unless the dog is trained I wouldn't rely on it for security. Burglars know most dogs are not a threat, especially if they bring dog treats.Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. -- James Madison
