Steel case ammo really that bad?

I passed on buying some Steel case tulamo 45acp today because I have heard its bad for your gun and the only 45 I have is my 1911 so I dont want it hurt... but is it really that bad?

I've shot steel case through almost every gun I have now and have owned in the past. I have never had a single problem. Just my experience. It's just the lacquer coated stuff you want to stay away from.

Like many have mentioned, the problem with steel case ammo is associated with the lacquer coating they used to use to prevent corrosion. Laquer melts when your gun is hot, and it gums up things pretty quickly. Combine that with the dirty powder used in steel cased ammo, and finely machined firearms will start to jam. Your extractor is usually the first thing to gum up enough to cause problems. Cleaning is difficult because the lacquer doesn't dissolve with most of the common cleaners...you may have to use acetone.

Several of my buddies used the old wolf ammo in their glocks and rarely had problems. AK's don't have a problem either. AR15's on the other hand, run into 2 issues (aside from extractor problems). The laquer can clog up the gas tubes, and the spent steel casings will beat up your brass deflector.

WWB comes in quantities other than 100/box. Maybe next time you should clarify? That'd be like assuming all Remington UMC is always in 250 round boxes just because they do bulk packs that way.

As far as my dislike of walmart just because it's walmart(If you can't identify the reasons walmart is well... walmart, it might be you), wasting gas and time driving there just to hope it's in stock is indeed a valid concern that has nothing to do with my general dislike of walmart.

That Lucky Gouger test had some great info in it. I will pass on using steel in my AR's. However my Saiga .223 and x39 rifles just eat it and smile.

Dunno, why would I assume you meant 100 pack when it's also available in 50? Sounds like walmart was pretty high pre-panic looking back to your comment about the cheapest box of brass .45 being in the $20 range.

The only guns I could recall that had issues with steal case ammo were Keltec SU16's. I saw two of them blow up, but that was because the owners didn't clean them after shooting 300+ rounds of Wolf through them. Also, for some reason I had at least 4 Sig extractors break, while using steal case ammo. Granted they were range guns and had a lot of rounds through them. One of the best deals I got was a Sig P226 with a broken extractor due to the guy using Wolf ammo. Sold it to me for $125. Told him he could fix the extractor pretty easily for $25-$35, but he still wanted to sell it to me. I fixed it and sold the gun for $350

I shoot steal case ammo every once and awhile, but make sure to clean my guns after every 100-150 rounds.

No, I'll be passing on the $18/50. Besides, being able to avoid walmart is easily worth a couple of bucks

Now I am curious about that .22 comblock ammo that uxo2 mentioned, and if he meant commie .22lr or something else entirely.

What does the "Polymer coated" mean? Is that another way of saying its older laquer coated ammo?
