Steel case ammo really that bad?

I passed on buying some Steel case tulamo 45acp today because I have heard its bad for your gun and the only 45 I have is my 1911 so I dont want it hurt... but is it really that bad?

Depends on who you ask and your gun. I shoot steel case thru my Glock all the time, it eats anything. My Sig's dont like it as much. Also depends on the caseing itself. Alot of it used to be laquered for corrosion resistance. A hot gun would melt the laquer making casings stick. Alot now just nickel plate or galvanize, so alot less issues.

There are others here with more info, but for me it simply depends on the gun and the round. Some of mine eat it up, others dont like it.

Never had any issues with Tula, Wolf or Herters. When I go to the range to plink or to an IDPA match I use a lower price round. For defense I use a more expensive round like Hornady Critical Defense in pistol and PDX1 for the AR. The rounds get alot of haters just like say Glock or Kimber. The trolls are plenty. Try the ammo for yourself rather than listen to forum warriors.

I would never put steel or aluminum cased ammo in my 1911. It's probably safe to do though since the casings always have a coating to prevent wear.

I've shot Wolf, Tulammo, Herter's, etc. through my 1911's, Glock's, AR's, etc. and never had problems. However, the casings do have some kind of coating that stick, when they get hot. I don't shoot rapid fire drills with the steel case ammo for that reason because it could cause issues with extractors.

Not if the case has a tapper and/or length, 7.62x54r and 223 gets stuck for me, 7.62x39 and 45auto no issue.

I have never shot it out of a pistol. My M1A and AR will eat it all day. The laquered casings have gotten stuck on my m1a but that was at the end of a long weekend of shooting.

Nothing really wrong with steel case ammo but it is generally used in war time production only. The brass case is the preferred material for this application.

Yep. It really is that bad. Already tested. However, the amount you save in ammo, you can use to replace your barrel...

The steel ammo wore out the barrels exponentially faster than the brass/copper ammo.

I've used steel cased 223 and 308 in my AR rifles, as well as some steel cased 9mm in a Sig SP2022. It ran just fine. I don't know how well my guns would hold up long term if that was all I used, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy more steel cased ammo if I found a good deal.

The worst I've heard of is that steel cases don't expand like brass, so you get more gasses back into the action, which really, you can clean up.
The problem is that if you switch to brass case without cleaning the gun first, the brass case will stick to the carbon deposits in the chamber and will not extract properly... as in, the rim will probably be damaged. Not all guns will do that, you would need to try it on yours if you were brave enough.
Really, steel case is great for practice and some obscure things may only be available in steel, but just clean the gun before using brass case and you will probably have minimal issues.

Yeah...passed on tul ammo for $15 a box... Its gone now and to be honest after watching the luckygunner link (even though I wouldnt shoot it like that) I will just hold out till I find more brass elsewhere.

No problem with steel cased ammo for me may it be my CZ, 1911 or AK.

Nothing wrong with the eastern block ammo. They have used it for awhile now all over the world so no reason you should pass on it for plinking here. I was paying $4.99 for a box of 20 .223 and a box of 50 .45 for $14 and some change before the ammo shortage. If you want to spend twice as much for plinking ammo go right ahead it's your right. Those of us who know nothings wrong with the cheaper ammo will have more to shoot .
