    Metcalf fire

Anybody at metcalf a few minutes ago? I was shooting skeet and there was a brush fire over at the rifle range. They brought in a few planes and a helicopter, and kicked everyone out.

I'm betting it was a round sparking off the steel hanging targets, because there was quite a large area burned behind the backstop.

    Anybody else see that?

I know this sounds rude so I'll say it anyway. A fire. Lets all watch, oooh. It is what it is. There is an accident on the freeway, lets all slow down and look, oooh.

And IF anybody did see it, so what. The fire is out. So what. Now if it were a hot babe on the beach topless and applying lotion on her privates, then ask "did anybody see that?"

Huh, I left there around 3:00. Looks like I just missed it.

0321, I'm asking because someone might have a better idea of what happened. If it was sparked from the hanging targets, some hippie might get a bug up their butt and try to ban steel ammo here like in socal.

Even if it was steel case ammo or not. The fire is out and hopefully nobody got hurt. Steel ammo has lead in the center. Like for example Wolf 7.62X39. It is just a thin metal shell around the lead. The FD and range officials will determine the cause. For all we know that guy flying that Piper Super Cub could have flicked a cig out the window.

What a worthless post. If you don't like or appreciate a discussion topic you should move on, not thread crap.

OP, I appreciate your starting this thread. Metcalf is my home range and I am interested to hear more about this fire. Not because I want to see the latest "freeway accident", but because the fire may affect range operation.

Also, Metcalf is a county owned range in a notably anti gun county and incidents like this fire, or the recent shooting of the power plant down the road from the range, could easily become a much bigger issue than 0321 seems to realize.

Yeah, I hope it doesn't earn us a rule change. There was a fairly sizable area burned, but I don't think any actual range facilities were destroyed. Maybe I will ride out there tomorrow and see what's up.

I can understand what 0321 is saying. My question is that it seems like you guys really enjoy that place and you show a sense of concern. Why not form a shooting club at Metcalf? Or is there already one there? I never been their. Live to far and am on the road from time to time.

^^^^^^^^This. It was very transparent the Mercury News was making a direct connection to the range when they published the story on the power equipment vandalism/sabotage, as if someone from the range did it in the middle of the night.
The anti's will seize on anything.

                  It's for the squirrels!

I was just out at the shotgun range again tonight. The nice ladies there said they weren't sure what started the fire, and a fairly large area burned, but they've been open for business as usual.

A fire on the Range you say? I want to know what's going on, maybe 'recon' the area. Now there is a new idea.

Ten dollars says it was a group of hunters sitting around a illegal campfire roasting portions of Bambi. They get the blame for everything.
