You can zero it at any distance you want. But do keep one thing in mind. If this is a rifle with optic sitting 1.75" above the barrel, zeroing at 25 yard will make 50 yard shot too low. And pretty much difficult to use at 100 yards.

For my needs I'll not med to use the maximum range of my MSR. Never want to shoot anyone unless no other option to protect my life. But at extreme ranges it will difficult to convince prosecutors or later a jury that my life was in imminent danger if I take a long range shot. Cal penal 197.

The Appleseed folks shoot entire rifleman qualifications 25. I did the course and honestly think it was better than what I learned in the Marine Corpse, oops I mean Corp.

Back to topic, I like to start at 25 , which is a 200 yard zero for most 30 cal rifles. Once my group is small enough at 25, all within 1 inch (4moa) I verify the 200 yard zero and leave it there . My rifle, 4 minutes @ 200 .( 4 clicks )

          From 200 to 300yds I will come up 3 minutes (9inches) from 300 to 400, come up 3 minutes again, ((12inches) etc
I have the come ups written down on tape that is on the forward part of the stock .
A faster or slower bullet will of course change the amount of adjustment . I think the 556 slug at 25 yards is a 300 yard zero, but don't quote me in that .

It could be advantageous to consider animal sized targets when thinking of where you personally want to keep your sights .

Was going to point out the necro posting but noticed the 'In Memoriam' earlier in the thread. That would have been in bad taste, in hindsight.
