Savage also makes a fantastic rifle, not as large of an aftermarket as Rem 700, i.e. instead of 10 options for an alum chassis stock for Rem700, Savage has 3, but I love mine and are DIY friendly.

Just got this scope in the mail yesterday for my new .308

we can all agree that more people have stated that the rem 700 is the one to go with. so i think the rem 770 needs a shout for a beginning rifle

get a cheytac m200 civi version cant any better than that.

if you cant afford it, rem 700 best bang for your buck.

a bolt action .22 made by Ruger or Marlin (I'd go this route)
              OR
semi Ruger 10/22 or Marlin 795
              +
              a decent .22 specific scope

              sandbag/s

              notebook
              pencil

              jacketed .22 ammo

start there and learn your drops for your rifle in .22 at any range without a rangefinder or markings on the range AND be able to hit a paper plate reliably at 150 yards

before moving on to a larger caliber

if you want to, sell your setup and be out only a hundred or 20 dollars, with a lot more experience setting up a scope and learning on an easy rifle over learning with heavy recoil and costly .308

I'd recommend going to .223 in bolt action before moving onto .308

I jumped straight to .308 and regretted doing so, as the .223 will give you plenty of distance and opportunity

by the time you're done with .223, you really need to be taking dedicated precision rifle courses

A solid 91/30 and my favorite the M39 iron sights 300-400 yards all day long 18" plates.

7.62x54 You either love them or your hate them. I have been shooting many different rifles for many years and so far this is my favorite.

                Very very accurate

                  300-400yds is intermediate range.
Long range is 800yds and beyond.

You can also get a Thompson Center Diminsion if your not sure of a caliber. You can get the gun for about $700 in a caliber your comfortable with.

Than if you you want to go bigger/smaller/cheaper ammo you buy a new barrel and bolt set up and mag and you go again.

You can either get one set of optics and change to the barrel you prefer or put optic on the new barrel depending on $$$

This is a great setup cause once you have different barrels you can always change for what your shooting...

                    They come in everything from .204 .223 22-250 30-06 .308 7mm 7mm-06
And tons of fun with one gun and your not restricted to one caliber!

                    Just my opinion

No it doesn't. Friends don't let friends buy Remington 770s.
