Buy a Remington 700 Tactical or Varmint rifle and good ammo like Federal Gold Medal. And, learn how to shoot those things.

In 90s, I took a Remington 700 VSSF 308 Win rifle to a FBI sniper school and pretty much out shot everyone in the class. Remington is a good rifle for the money.

I am also new to long range. I went with a Remington AAC-SD .308, good price and a great place to start. Plenty of room for upgrades as the fund slowly flow in. The start up hurt the most. $1300. But I got the rifle, scope (Vortex Viper HS Tactical) 20 moa base, leupold 30mm rings and oversized bolt knob. Next upgrade will be trigger then stock and maybe mag conversion. But in the mean time Im working on load development. I have only taken it out to 450 yrds but that was with plinker loads to break in the barrel and for brass to neck size. But all-in-all after the first run on test loads, I can see the some of the potential this rifle will be able to shoot.

BTW now I dont want to go to work. Thanks guys..... work.

this guy i agree with. "if you have to ask - start here"

caveat : swap 308 for a 8mm mauser if you can find surplus cans

Think about how much you want to spend on the rifle, then probably double that for how much you are going to need to spend on a scope/rings/base. Then in you are shooting 308 plan to spend $1 a round if you don't reload. If you pick anything besides 308, ammo goes up even more. Long range is expensive, try and buy as much stuff used as possible. Especially if you reload already and can buy a rifle someone has already worked a load up for.

I would not get a Mosin Nagant 7.62x54R. Those cheap pieces of crap are not as accurate as a Remington 700 in .308.

Also there was a guy on Calguns whose son blew his face off with the Mosin Nagant!!! It is CHEAP, if that is the way you roll.

Trust me get a Remington 700P, DON'T get the factory fluted barrel. If you want better accuracy from your stock Remington barrel you can have the throat shortened for better accuracy. Remington keeps the throat long for liability reasons.

You could also get an AR-10 which allows for faster follow up shots, but as a beginner you won't need this.

You should also get a proper range finder and some flags. The accuracy really comes from reading the wind and judging distance well in order to dial in your scope. Good Luck.

Yeah that's why so many people shoot Mosin Nagants over Remington 700 rifles in competitions. We are talking about which rifle to get TODAY and not WWII. And for the RECORD, I would rather have an M1 Garand than what the Russians used in WWII any day of the week.

Also the quality is not necessarily very consistent. I have seen some rough surplus crap to mint condition leftovers. So for the money it is CHEAP, especially if you find some diamonds.

Honestly I would rather get a Saiga .308 then a used Mosin Nagant as my ONLY cheap long range rifle.

But I love my Remmy and it was one of my best acquisitions EVER! I would take her over EVERY single Mosin Nagant I have EVER shot.

Comparing a Mosin Nagant to a Remington 700 is like comparing a Ford model T to a Ford Mustang.

Plus I don't like accidental discharges from OLD pieces of equipment. There was a fundraiser on CalGuns a while ago for someone's son who shot himself in the face from an accidental discharge from a "Mosin Nagant".

Yeah, I guess the 700 never had a problem with accidental discharges.

There is no better beginners precision rifle than a heavy-barreled Remington 700 chambered in 308.
                          +1

Aside from hunting rifles that have a respectable range (~500 yards with confidence), I set up a Remington 700 Milspec 5R with an AICS stock, adjustable trigger and a Kahles scope. Last year I purchased a Barrett 98B in .338 LM, but haven't had a chance to use it yet.
