What are you shooting? Paper , big game ? That has a lot to do with your choice AND define long distance.... From my last dozen trips to the range 50 yards seems to be LONG distance for the new breed of ninjas....

As a starter rifle I would get an AR15. Start with a .223, then move up from there. Just buy other uppers, .22lr, 223, 5.7, 6.8, and then 50. Expect to pay about $1,000 at first, then $1000 for the optics.

In the end your optics will cost more then the rifle itself.

If you want a starter gun that you just replace the rifle when you have mastered it (LOL...not happening) , go with a Remington 700.

How far have you shot your AR15? Whats its chamber? What optic does it have? Whats your budget? Please name the location of your shooting...can you actually shoot AT&T where you live? If 800 yards is the longest range you have access too... then an AR15 set up for long range will be very challenging. The cost to buy a Rem 700 + optic would be the same as setting up your Ar15 to do the same thing.

If you just want another rifle...go for it.

What's your budget? What's the range you want to shoot? How much do you want to spend on optics? What's the largest caliber you feel comfortable shooting

anything can shoot long distance it depends on your opinion of what a long distance is. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2M1hC4c0tc
this shows that you can accomplish long distance with a cheap rifle with a decent amount of upgrades, (glass bedding ...)
it has been mentioned before and it rings true.. optics will usually be more than the rifle.

for punching paper a 5.56 round will go 800 yards.. but lots of bullet drop and easily affected by wind. so location is critical.

for me. i prefer bolt actions. less moving parts. and in the end usually cost less anyway.
remmington 700 rifles are almost as bountiful in the US as AR's are. solid choice.

also i recommend taking alook at the new mossberg mvp.
its is made to hold ar 15 magazines. 5.56 and .308 versions.
there are a few threads floating around here talking about it. i cant find them at the moment.

start at 50 yards. then 100 then 200 then 300 so on .. it will be less frustrating then starting at 300 then jumping up to 500.

                Where are you located?

There are matches and training sessions in socal and nocal.

See what other people are using. Ask questions.

CAPRC.com is where you need to go for long range training/competition info.

Perhaps check out the thread on whether or not to use irons or glass. Good input in that one.

For long, long range, I like .308. Get some good ammo with "boat tail" bullets. The 7.62 x 54R (Mosin) works great, cheaper.

My opinion... .223 and the 7.62 x 39 just don't have the poop out to 400 yards +.

Remington 700 in .308 is the perfect tool for what you want to do. It'll put a hole in a quarter at 100 yards and is effective out to ~800 yards. Pick a good reputable scope to put on it, but it doesn't have to break the bank (like this one: http://swfa.com/SWFA-SS-10x42-Tactic...cope-P500.aspx ) I have a H-S Precision HTR in .308 and love to shoot it 100-600 yards+ (although I haven't shot it in a while bc of ammo prices ).

This has a lot of add ons from factory new, and shoots really well but I am just starting to get out to 300 yard ranges and I love it. The Rem700 are very often great shooters out of the box and the ability to add on and change everything on your rifle is endless. with handloads I have been able to get 3/8MOA at 100 yards

There is no better beginners precision rifle than a heavy-barreled Remington 700 chambered in 308.

Get a Ruger 10/22 along with the Rem 700. You can practice your skills for hundreds of rounds cheaply and easily at a 25 yard range on the 10/22, then bring those skills out to the longer range with the rem 700....Unless you can afford thousands of $ in ammo, then skip the 10/22.
