Ruger american + nicer glass.
Or if you want to modify/tweak, an R700 variant.

My vote would be for a controlled-feed action.
If buying new:
Winchester 70 Featherweight Classic
Ruger 77 Hawkeye
Edit: I didn't see the left-hand comment. I guess the Winchester's out.Last edited by scidx; 03-30-2013, 6:22 AM.

Out of the box the savage will outshoot most other common brands. They have to shoot 1.5" or better to leave the factory. I have one and it is excellent as have the others I have shot.
Tikka is garr to shoot 1" or better. The 2 I have do much better than that.
T/C bolt action rifles are garr to shoot 1" or better and the 2 that I have shot dis so.
Weatherby Vanguard (& MK-V) are garr to shoot 1.5" or better and the one I own does as well as a friends.
No garr on win/ruger/rem/browning.
Some Rem 700 are great shooter and some are not QC is spotty at times. I have a friend with several and his shoot very well another friend sold his as no matter what it would not shoot at all good. The Rem I own all shoot well except my 223 Varmit rifle which I have shot out the barrel after 43 years.
The Rugers I own(6+) all shoot well except the 257Roberts. It shoots very well now that I had it rebarreled with a Douglas air-gage SS barrel.
Have shot win70 and it shot well. Same with Browning and Mossberg.
Have not shot a Stevens yet.
Most rifles today will outshoot most shooters unless you get a bad rifle which can happen.A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.

I'm a lefty as well. Whatever you do, don't let anybody try to tell you to just buy a right hand bolt gun and "adapt".
Might have to extend your budget by a hundred or so. if you go NIB
Savage, for hunting, I would look at the 16 FLHSS.
Or a lightly used Remington 700 BDL... classic blued steel and wood in left hand. they show up here from time to time.Comment

You would want to get a Savage with at least the Accu-Trigger and the Accu-Stock as well if you can.
The Savage without either of those is called the Axis and you don't want that one unless it is all you can afford.
As I stated previously Turner's has a nice Savage with a Nikon 3x9 scope on sale for less then $600 right now.Comment
