does that include the budget for a scope?

I'd go with a low end rifle and some nicer glass, even if it stretches the budget.

Doesn't include budget for optics. I want quality in the weapon, and know that the optics are another beast.

My father in law is a marksman. I thought I was till I met him few months ago. Doing an elk hunt with him in Oct in Colorado. So I need to be dialed by summer. I'm a leftie also. Really appreciate the responses fellas.

I think hunters should boycott Colorado.

Savage, Remington, Ruger American, Tikka T3 Lite, Howa....

Plenty of basic options in that price range without optics.

Ruger American, you will have money left over for a scope and some ammo.

If it's 800 or so for just the gun, I would say a Ruger(yes, I'm a fan of Ruger) Scout rifle.

I see that mess. My father in law is a wildlife biologist for the blm there. He is just the coolest dude and is non political, although he wanted Romney to win(in laws are Mormons) but other than that is just a hunter true and true.. Hunted his entire life. Vietnam Vet and just a great guy.

So I'm gonna go there and harvest an elk. And will post up pics when we do.

Savage recently came out with a new rifle they call their Hog Hunter. It's more compact and may be considered more of a brush gun but the reviews I've read on the accuracy were pretty good. It has an MSRP of $535.

Mosin. 7.62x54R is about the same as .308. It's under $800 and can take any game in NA. ^^

Try different rifles and buy the one you like and feels best to you.

Can't go wrong with a Rem. 700. Accurate and ready to go out of the box.
