    Seeking Stat information

My girlfriend wants to do a paper for school on the effect firearms have in communities. She is looking for both pro and anti information.

Basically journals, articles and website with stats showing....

How many states / cities allow open carry, concealed carry.
The difference in crime between the oc/cc states and cities and the no oc/cc states and cities..

The crime stats on cities like DC / NY who have gun restrictions compared to more free pro gun cities.

Basically anything which she can reference which has stats for both sides. She wants to be able to show the differences for both sides.

Obviously she is going for a pro-gun stance, but her professor is requiring all students to have references for their papers.

    Any help would be appericated!

    Thanks

Basic problem: firearms do not have an effect which is distinguishable from race or income distribution.

As an example (I use often): murder rates are the usual marker for violent crime, expressed in number of murders per 100,000 population. For the last 30 years or so, 60-70% of murders in the United States have been committed with firearms. The Bureau of Justice Statistics has a good page on homicide.

The number of homicides goes up and down over the years. The number of guns in 'civilian' hands goes only UP. There is no correlation between the number of homicides and the number of firearms.

One can speculate there might be an influence based on the distribution of guns within the population, but discovering who actually has the guns has proved very challenging.

Essential sources are Gary Kleck and John Lott; Lott is more controversial than Kleck.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

Add into that a study done by the UN (latest 1999) comparing homicide rates, and suicides rates between countries then the lack of correlation becomes even more clear. They found that rates were just about the same (eg. 8/100,000 vs 14/100,000 people) between restrictive vs. non-restrictive countries, and industrial vs. non-industrial countries. (Some industrial countries like Brazil and the Ukraine are 5 times higher than the US). Human nature is the same regardless of the presence of firearms. It's less an economic issue, and more a cultural one.

Bizcuits. You may also look into finding the FBI stats on enforcement of gun related laws. There's a lot of stuff there with regards to different cities.

Here are a couple of links to the AZ DPS on this subject. First is CCW data by county. Second is annual statewide crime report, but there is a section that breaks it down by county.

Another useful site for crime data is:

"Did I say "republic?" By God, yes, I said "republic!" Long live the glorious republic of the United States of America. Damn democracy. It is a fraudulent term used, often by ignorant persons but no less often by intellectual fakers, to describe an infamous mixture of socialism, miscegenation, graft, confiscation of property and denial of personal rights to individuals whose virtuous principles make them offensive." - Westbrook Pegler

I collected all these (thanks xrMike) into my del.icio.us under 'antiguncontrol', anyone can subscribe or copy them to their own bookmarks:

                I added one for: http://gunmap.org/

Keep 'em coming, I've been meaning to do this for awhile (collect the wisdom and bookmarks of the masses in one location, that is). These are great to have around when you get into one of those disagreements and just want to send people a URL and let them read...
