The following qualify for Handgun Safety Certificate (HSC) exempt status:
Peace officer (active California)
Peace officer (active federal)
Peace officer (honorably retired California or federal)
Reserve peace officer (as defined in Penal Code Section 832.6)
Persons who have successfully completed P.O.S.T. 832 PC firearms training
Federally licensed firearm collector who has a DOJ-issued COE who is acquiring a federally-defined curio/relic
Person to whom a handgun is being returned, where he/she is the owner of the firearm
Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW) Permit Holder
Military - active duty
Military - honorably retired
Military - active reserve
Certain particular and limited authority peace officers
Persons who hold a DOJ-issued special weapons permit
Persons taking possession of firearms pursuant to specific conditions related to operation of law acquisitions

Well, lets see I have my California state issued peace officer identification card (which I am authorized under 830.5). And my PC-832 certificate.
Man, if I knew this was such a hostile forum I would have steered away. Didn't know I would get hounded over a question that simply confused me.
And I am curious why my responsibility as a correctional officer would be questionable to know everything about firearm sells and FFL guidelines. I am human just like anyone else. Like I stated, I thought I was correct with having to go through a FFL with transfer and was being argued with that I didn't. I was simply clarifying somewhere I would most likely get a clear answer from. Forgive me, I shall refrain from asking any other questions that might question my intelligence to other people who don't know me what-so-ever.Last edited by chile; 02-27-2013, 9:22 PM.Comment

FWIW your answers and explanations make perfect sense to me. As a CDC officer there would be no need to study and know penal code or aspects of enforcement, just detainee/prisoner security related laws and practices. And hell most patrol officers are not very well read on gun laws as evidenced by the harassment many AR owners get for fully compliant guns.
Don't let it get to you, as the 2nd amendment is under active attack at the moment plenty of people are a little touchy to things that look out of the ordinary. If you step back and look at someone who can have a serial # run, is exempt from the HSC, but does not know transfer procedures, it does come off a bit unusual at first glance. I hope you stick around, there are lots of good resources and people here.zymurgy:

Chile--sorry i got here late. My SIL is a CDCR CO, and carries under
Penal code 830.5:
The following persons are peace officers whose authority
extends to any place in the state...Except
as specified in this section, these peace officers may carry firearms
only if authorized and under those terms and conditions specified by
their employing agency:
(b) A correctional officer employed by the Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation...
(c) The following persons may carry a firearm while not on duty: a
parole officer of the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation,
or the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, Division of
Juvenile Justice, a correctional officer or correctional counselor
employed by the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation,
(d) Persons permitted to carry firearms pursuant to this section,
either on or off duty, shall meet the training requirements of
Section 832 and shall qualify with the firearm at least quarterly.
What really pisses my SIL off is that he has to qualify quarterly, and I'm on a two-year rotation.
He carries a non-laminated card so it can be signed off.
Your HSC exemption codes are: X-31 (Peace Officer); X-81 (POST 832 PC)
