You guys carry some pretty heavy arsenal while hiking...

I spend at least 30 days camping outdoors every year. On established campgrounds and trails, I carry maybe a bear spray if bear is going to be a problem in the area. Backpacking in the back-country, for sure bear spray (effective for both 2 and 4-legged). Sometimes if I feel like working out, a snub nose Ruger SS in 357Mag (and extra ammo).

Honestly, I never use any of these deterrence. Since most animals are more afraid of us then us of them. The closest encounter with dangerous animal I've encounter is when a mountain lion jump on to the ground maybe 10 ft from me then ran off. Bears mostly just mind their own business and move on. No encounter with dangerous 2-legged yet... knock on wood!

What I bring depends on what I own haha. My usual camp gun is my 1911 and any of the long guns I have. My problem is that most of my firearms are surplus, so if I'm camping for more than a night I have a real concern about stuff rusting.
I don't hike, at least not very far. So whatever rifle I bring just gets slung up or carried over the shoulder.

It's not so much for protection...though that's as good a reason as any.
I just think I should be allowed to carry a sidearm (or rifle) when hiking because "I want to!"

With this azzault weapon on wheels, All I gotta do is leave it parked in my yard and whenever I'm out in the sticks and is in trouble, all I gotta do is press the button on my neck chain and a gps coord will be sent via satelite and the azzault weapon will fly to my exact location within 30secs.

If my penis was as large as Bill K Lopez's I would not need any other protection whilst camping, but it's not, so when I go where I'm worried about 4 legged foe I take my S+W 625 Mountain gun, when I am more concerned about 2 legged foe I take my M9A1....better to have a tool and not need it , than need a tool and not have it.
Off camping with my eldest this WE who is 6 YO, it is my duty as his father to make sure he has the protection he deserves!.

Panoche hills, not been there before so figured it's time to give it a look.
Have Bacon and eggs, and some Elk steaks for us to 'rough it' with.
Thanks for the support, my boy loves camping, and we are planning to do some back country hiking this summer. Will probably start taking my daughter as well by next year....good times

Most guys wont get it. It's a superstitious belief to camp or sleep really close to a river/lake/stream etc. If the op isn't really familiar with his background cultural beliefs and is westernized, they wouldn't know. I am familiar with these asian beliefs bcuz I basically grew up around them.

i'd be more worried about a rain storm up stream causing a rise in the river... tents dont make good boats lol.

I'm good at pulling out... dont really need protection.
