The private ranges is where they carry. I was concerned with the legal aspects of doing so at a private facility. We shoot regularly with LEOs and none of them mention it but then again they may not know the particulars of that law.

    Thanks everyone for you input.

My range does permit holster draw if you have a CCW.

one day I was shooting my 1911 and I had a box of 9mm sitting on the bench. The RSO took a look and asked what the 9 was for, I didn't think and responded for my Kahr and motioned to my hip. He informed me of the rule of no carry.
It just seems that it's ironic that the range supports the right to self protection, just as long as it's not in their house.

I think this is a little differant than say Safeway. Their main concern would be a ND that's why all guns must have flags during halts in shooting. You also must be unloaded when behind the shooting line. As for CCW I agree with the Concealed is Concealed statement. I think generally the open carry is discoureged even if unloaded. IDPA shoots have shooters only areas any other place you cannot carry loaded.

At Oroville there is no range master.

As a retired Deputy I am exempt from most of the CCW laws as it pertains to where I can carry...however if it's at a range with a range master...regardless of their rules I DO NOT ccw. Now if it's at a BLM shooting area...no range master...you bet I ccw...not everyone who goes up to shoot is an honest hardworking citizen.

Even a dim bulb criminal knows better then to pull a robbery attempt at a gun store.

At my nearest indoor range, the staff openly carry. The only reason anyone would try to rob the range is "suicide by gun-store-employee" .

Compared to the remote and manageable risk of a criminal attack, its significantly more likely someone's going to pull a DEA move and put a bullet in themselves or a fellow patron by mistake. That's a bad thing no matter where you work out of, but in an anti-gun state like California it would be like buying a sword for your executioner. The city councils opposed to gun stores would have a green light to shut down the range-not a good thing for anyone, except the Leland Yees in the population.

My Rifle Club does not allow any holstered weapons and does not allow shooting from a hoslter. Most of the RO are quite nice but one of the "helpers" gave me grief about having a holster on the bench (even though nothing was in it and was just sitting on my gun bag). He said "we don't like holsters on the range - next time, please leave it in your car." I was about to argue about it just being an accessory in my gun bag but opted for the "sure" and walked away from him and left it on my bench. No RO has ever mentioned anything to me as it is always in my bag, on the bench, in plain sight. They all know me and know I am not some newb non-member.

This is true. Realized that wasn't clear. I asked about doing that once, so that I could carry less in my hands between rifle/pistol ranges when switching. He told me I could carry my rifle on a sling, with the action open, but not the handgun in the holster. I presume it is because, even if it would holster with the action open, it wouldn't be visible that way

Encountered a few of those good ole boys in the middle of Desolation Wilderness. I always CCW carry and bring my trusty black rifle with me, when shooting or camping in BLM.

The average CCW holder and even the average LEO's often times could barely qualify with their guns. They aren't the Calgunners who shoot a few times a week or once a month. They shoot once a year to qualify or if your lucky they are practicing a little before they try to qualify. I would say there were at least 5 LEO or CDC cadets and active duty officers that came in every few weeks because they kept failing qualifications.

I've had a retired DOJ Chief's come up to me and ask me what's wrong with his Sig because it wouldn't fire. I field stripped it and there was so much sock lint in the gun it was blocking the firing pin. He didn't shoot it since the year before when he qualified. There were two ND's by off duty LEO and correction officer in front of the range. One went into the table and bounced off the concrete and the other went through the range shack. These are the "Trained" professionals who took more than the 8 and 16 hour CCW courses.

During a security guard training course that were held before opening once a week one of the students turned his .357 to the left during slow fire and drawing to look at the cylinder and let a round loose. Luckily he was on the far left because he would have shot the guy next to him.

If you work at a range you'll be surprised and shocked how some people are still alive and Darwin hasn't taken them. Guys looking down barrels of guns after a misfire. Guys looking down the barrel of their buddies gun because of a misfire. Girls dancing around with a loaded gun and their finger on their trigger as they point a Glock 19 at your chest because a piece of brass went down her shirt.

I was only there for three years. The guys who've been there for decades have even crazier stories.

You just have to go to the range occasionally and be observant to notice some crazy things. Been muzzle sweeped way to many time...one guy with a Mac 9 and struggling with the magazines....kept bump firing from the hip too...destroy several other people's targets...

People who climb up the BERM that separated one range from another during a cease fire, despite the RSO yelling at them multiple times and there being big signs.

No negligent discharges witnessed yet, thankfully.

Following basic safety is incredibly easy really...it is scary that some just simply cannot do it. Especially hate the punks that get pissy because the RSO corrected them. I really have a lot of respect for many of the RSO' I have encountered.

Last week at oak tree, some numbskull on my line had a sig with a laser mounted on the rail and during an active fire, he stopped between shots to turn the barrel at his face to see if his laser was on. I looked at him incredulously as he caught my eye. I could only roll my eyes and look away.

Two weeks ago some kid was firing a shotgun with his buddies, all clearly newbs to firearms and after firing a round, the kid turns around with his still loaded and unsafe weapon and turns around to hand it off to the next numbskull with the barrel at chest height pointing it at the entire line. He almost got a beatdown by about five people. It's crazy out there and why ALL weapons need to be visible.
