if you know something is on the way , leave a note on your door stating that you do not wish to have the package left behind, and you will arrange pick up from the hub. The driver doesn't know what's in the box, if it's not signature required then they will release it. If you don't want your packages left by the door, pay the extra for the signature service. Btw driver will not be able to overwrite the signature required package once he scan the bar code, so if he signed your name and later it got lost, then everything is on him and it will come out of his own pocket.

I've stopped noticing when a large box of ammo is just dumped on my front deck. FEDEX even left a M-1 Garand out there with no one home.

Glad I live in a rural area. We know our driver and his family and no one steals stuff off your porch out here.

If you can, use FedEx Ground, that may help he cause for the most part. Unlike the FedEx overnight or UPS drivers, the FedEx ground drivers actually own their trucks and are held personally accountable for all missing, damaged and/or misrouted packages. They aren't perfect either, but they seem to get it right more often than the other competitors out there.

Good luck with your drivers people!

This happened to me once. The driver delivered the box to a 2501 address and mine was 2510. I checked the delivery report and it said it was delivered to a lady at 2501. I went over there and the fat ***** had already opened my box. I was steaming!! I went off on her and told her to read the ****ing name and address on packages that she opens from now on. I also reported her to the leasing office. Suffice it to say, she regularly brings my incorrectly delivered packages over with the quickness.

I am glad the Independence ammo I ordered came quickly, but I cringed when I saw it sitting right on my porch after several hours in just the OEM box which said 'Independence Rifle Cartridges, 5.56 caliber, made in Israel'.

A thief would not have had to guess what was inside the box.

If I'm not home they know to either toss them over the fence or know which neighbors can sign for them.
I don't know a driver that would wait for an answer at the door or use a pager. They might toss the package in the direction of the open garage. If they need a signature they ring the doorbell and turn and leave in one motion. If you don't catch them before they get to the truck you are out of luck.

OP, I hope you have better luck with another carrier! Makes me wonder each time I do have to track a UPS package, and there is a banner/link that says I can divert the package to a UPS Store for a "small fee." Doesn't that just give you more confidence in their delivering ability?
divert to a UPS store, yes. if you have one of their customer service centers around, though, no cost to have them hold it there instead of sending out for delivery.
