On the news, one of the eyewitnesses indicated that the shotgun was still in the kid's pants and was not pointed at the officers when he was shot.

What a lot of people realize is that kids aren't so much kids anymore. The 14-17 age range is the prime age for hitmen for most gangs nowadays because they are easily manipulated by the gang bosses and aren't as likely to face the same kind of punishment that the 18+ gang bosses would.

It's a horribly sad thing that so many parents don't take the effort to know and control where their kids are and what they are doing.

All of you saying "good riddance" or "he had it coming" are just sick. You weren't there and you don't know what really happened.

Even if this kid did point a firearm at police officers and was justifiably shot, which very well may be the case, glorifying the act is just incomprehensible. I'm sure many of you have similarly aged children and.....you know what I'm not even going to finish that thought.

Sad that it had to happen, but I understand why the officers responded as they did. If anyone points a weapon at an officer, you will get a response you may not like.

Once again I am shocked that so many people believe what is written/said in the media and then base their opinions on what the media said.

HOW OFTEN DOES THE MEDIA GET ANYTHING RIGHT??? Especially within the first 24-48 hours.

The media's 'facts' on this story are not going to be any more accurate than on a story about guns or gun control, and we all know how full of BS and misinformation those stores are.

In all honestly, no one here has a clue as to what went down on that street because the media spins anything and everything to sell papers.

The early 'evidence' (and I use that word VERY loosely at this point in the progression of the story) makes it sound like the kid did a VERY stupid thing if he pointed a gun at the police. Blindly agreeing with and jumping to media based conclusions (mostly) because it happened in Oakland.

But before any lynch mobs head off down the road, I wish people would remember just how full of BS the media is and how they can hardly get the name of their own paper right.

It may well turn out to be exactly like the initial news reports said, or it could do a 180 like the story last week about the off duty cop in Temecula who shot and killed one guy and wounded another. At first the media (and some posts on here) were ready to crucify the cop... but then it turns out the cop was more than likely jumped from behind, declared he was a cop before he shot to protect his own life. Although, even in this case, there are still lots of unanswered questions.

All I can say is that I wish people would be as skeptical about ALL the news they hear on the TV/Radio/Newspaper/Internet as they are about stories related to firearms.

I am tired of "boy shoots.....", "boy shot and killed by...." headlines. I would for once like to see an honest headline like 15 year old dirtbag scum, gangbanging armed turd shot by police. OK, OK, more info is needed to make the above claims, but what is really unfortunate is that this will become just one of the statistics regarding children and guns. When people read about kids and guns they think of their 5 year playing in the backyard not this kid, and then they eagerly support restrictive laws.

if people do not want killings (by cop or drug dealers) in there area, why do they put up with the gang bangers??

the police can not stop anything going on in the areas "clamed" by the punks, but the home owners even the renters can stop the problems much better than any amount of money dumped by the tax payers.

This is so easy to answer for anyone who's lived in neighborhoods like this. The people tolerate the drug dealers and gangs because most of them have relatives or friends who are drug dealers or gang members. The home owners and renters for the most part know who's who and what they are doing. The ones who aren't relatives or friends of the punks, which is a small number, don't get involved and the gang members and drug dealers let them live in their houses without getting their houses shot up in the middle of the night. Have you ever lived in the ghetto?

As for the original post, the story in the SFgate is slanted because it gives credibility to the outright lies of the criminal's relatives.

So why was OJ Simpson, not shot when he toke that ride in the Bronco, i thought he had a gun with him or am i incorrect in thinking that. if its a cut and dry policy the police use and OJ had a gun on him then instead of been given a presidential motorcade he should of gone down in a hail of fire.

A 13-year-old is in stable condition after being hit when gunfire erupted following a memorial service in Oakland for a 15-year-old fatally shot by police last week.


Authorities said the youth was struck in the ankle when gunmen driving by in two separate cars opened fire toward a crowd Monday night.


Police Sgt. David Cronin said investigators suspected the shooters belonged to a gang considered rivals to the group to which the slain boy allegedly belonged.


Homicide investigators said three officers shot and killed Jose Luis Buenrostro around noon Wednesday when he pointed a sawed-off rifle at them.


Mourners rushed back into the church when the shooting started after the service. Authorities said no one else was hit.

Oakland police arrested two men with assault rifles over the weekend at a makeshift memorial for a 15-year-old boy who was shot and killed by officers after he allegedly pointed a sawed-off rifle at them, authorities said Monday.

Marco Mendez, 32, was arrested about 3:10 a.m. Sunday while standing on the 7800 block of Rudsdale Street in East Oakland holding a loaded AR-15 assault rifle, said Officer Roland Holmgren, a police spokesman. Mendez tried to flee but officers chased him down, Holmgren said.

At the same time, Holmgren said, police arrested Andre Piazza of Oakland after officers found a loaded AK-47 assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine on the front passenger seat of a Nissan Maxima he was driving. Piazza, 26, had asked officers to move their patrol cars so he could move the Nissan, Holmgren said.

Both men were gathered at the memorial for Jose Luis Buenrostro, who was shot and killed by three gang unit officers Wednesday when he allegedly pointed a sawed-off rifle at them near 79th Avenue and Rudsdale.

Mendez is on probation for drug offenses and has ties to a local street gang, and Piazza is on parole for drug convictions, authorities said. The two men will probably face federal gun charges, Holmgren said.

Relatives of Buenrostro's interviewed after he was killed expressed skepticism that he had a gun or, if he did, that he had pointed it at police. At a news conference Friday, police took the unusual step of showing reporters a picture of the rifle that they said Buenrostro had been carrying.
