Must agree with most here... Very sad and unfortunate... But this father is stupid... Always check the chamber when you pick up the gun... I mean hell, hes going in to sell the guns... you would figure he checked it first... Very sad, prayers to the family and may this little boys soul rest eternally at the feet of the Lord... Sad, but preventable

What a horrible incident. The grief and loss that the family will now endure will be something that I cannot imagine. Improper and unsafe handling of a firearm are completely to blame and land squarely on the father. I have no idea how the father will be able to live with himself from this point on.

So tragic...Of course the father was negligent, but I still feel sorry for him. He has already been punished far beyond anything a court could impose. I don't think it does any good to heap more guilt on him; how could he feel any worse? Let's take this as a lesson and honestly examine our own practices, and take time out of our lives to help others learn the right way. You think this would never happen to you? Well, invest in the training and develop the discipline to make that a certainty.

This is what they really want to say
"Let's feel sorry for the poor dad, he had no part in the horrible accident, that darn gun just went off as he set it down. I'll bet the gun pointed itself at the kid. Those guns, we need to get rid of them!!!"

Nothing said here can hurt the father of this child..he is beyond being hurt further. This is wvhy I can say..all of those silly additions to Ruger semi auto pistols are a plus..not a minus. The loaded chamber indicator is not just for those unfamiliar with firearms..it can be for the experienced but careless handler. I am not saying that the LCI would have prevented this but maybe this one or even another one. The LCI can also prevent the owner from thinking he is loaded when he is not....equally a problem if you use these things for a living. Anyway...for Dad..a prayer,I can do no more. Unthinkable..inconceivable..and so preventable.

Horrible story. I find it disturbing this man did not know the gun was loaded, and the gun was not cleared by an employee upon entry into the store with a gun. This was completely avoidable. I do feel horrible for the father, he will live with this the rest of his life. What sad loss of life.

Jeez. They guy even looks the stereotype. I'm just trying to even imagine how this is even possible to have this degree of negligence before it becomes more like deliberate? Gun in hand, finger on trigger, pointed at kid AND the safety just so happens to be off?

Accidental is not even a term to describe this event. I would even say negligent is overly generous. If there was a way to somehow look like you accidentally killed your own kid, this would be the way to do it. Even if this was "negligent" and not intentional I still feel like it should be treated as intentional just because it so extremely avoidable.
I don't even set a closed alcohol container in any compartment other than my trunk, let alone an uncased firearm.
At least it didn't happen in CA to add fuel to the anti-gun fire here.

Such a sad story. I'm sure the Anti-Gun folks will use this one as yet another example how evil guns are.

I agree with previous posters a gun does not just go off for no reason, if you where following standard safety rules there is no way this could have happened!

I'm sure the police will throughly inspect the gun to determine if there was actually a defect or other condition for a genuine accidental fire and my guess would be they will find that no such condition exists. However the news is not interested in waiting for the outcome of that information, they would rather just chalk it up to evil guns!

Yet if a child dies in a car accident because the parent did not make them wear a seat belt the media would be up in a frenzy about how terrible of a parent they must be. It wouldn't matter that the parent said the brakes failed...
