Even in Clark County, Nevada, you MUST REGISTER every handgun with the local PD! Where as, here in Ca. many of us legally own unregistered handguns and are still not required to register them. We also can still own normal magazines. I think NJ and MA residents hade to move theirs out of state or turn them over to local LE for destruction. Also, in Ca, it is legal (although almost impossible) to own title II firearms. Yet, there are still many states where it is just plain against the law.

When I moved to Michigan in 1982 from Colorado I had to take my handguns to the local PD and leave them for several weeks. After they kept them and were released back to me I got a permit for each one of them. As I remember any additional handguns required an advance permit from the PD before it could be purchased. Then I moved to Illinois and had to apply for a Firearms Ownere ID card which was needed for buying any firearm. Coming to CA in 1988 was actually (at the time) better for me.

The execrable 'Blue Card' is a silly artifact the local cops want to keep for some silly jackboot reason. You go to the gun shop, fill out the 4473 and a short one-page registration form and the blue card is handed to you along with the handgun. If you don't have a blue card to prove you've already got a registered handgun there is a 72 hour theft-of-property period until your lawfully owned merchandise is delivered to you. If you have a blue card the handgun is delivered immediately upon completion. There is a $25 tribute required for background check which is waived if you have a CHL.

Wherever you find evil restrictive law it is still evil and restrictive law. It may be less onerous than you have but it is still onerous and wrong.
People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

This was my thought regarding the thread title.

It's not that we have it better. It's that we have it less worse.

I guess I felt that way and why I started this thread.

Are you forgetting to mention that those in mass can possess NFA Weapons?

So in this case they can have something we in the PRC cannot.

                    Well, in Canada:

                    - short barreled (14inch ) pump shotguns are not restricted. They can be purchased like any other shotgun.
                    - no "handgun safety list"
                    - no need for bullet buttons/MMGs
                    - no "sporting purpose" issues to worry about for imports; Chinese guns are available; exotic semi autos are as well.
                    - no waiting periods
                    - no one-handgun-every 30 days rule
                    - can buy guns via mail order
                    - can buy guns from any licensed dealer anywhere in the country

The biggest things that tick me off are the waiting periods here in CA, and the fact that I can't buy a gun from an out of state dealer without getting a local FFL involved.

Isn't Canada restricted to long arms with 5 round max capacity?

Not so sure about the mail order, heard that was verbotten in the Can news article last year.

The local FFL for interstate is a federal law I believe.

Yeah, 5 round limit on their firearms. However, grenade/flare launchers aren't regulated as firearms or Destructive Devices and are in the same legal category as a power drill (last I heard).

There may not be a waiting period, but the forms and background check you go through to get a gun in Canada is significantly more severe and infringes far more on your right to privacy: the police have you list (and will call) all of your significant others from the last two-three years and ask them if they can think of any reason you shouldn't be allowed to own a gun.

Semi auto rifles are limited to 5, but there are exceptions to this. ( Rarely granted though. )

Could be something recently passed I guess. However, when I used to live there I bought guns via the mail pretty frequently. I used to read "The Gunrunner" ( now defunct ) and this one:

Yup. And you have to take a safety course as well. Once you've done that, you're good to go.

Canada isn't a firearms enthusiast's mecca - many US states are FAR better - but it's not all bad.

Lot of people with PO boxes in Alberta seem to think so. Then again, everyone in Montreal doesn't.
