They are as thins as they can get away with. Excess thickness = excess weight = less cargo.

Small ships are also common around harbors.

If your experience is just with container ships on the high seas, why go right ahead and raise that strawman. Pirates aren't going after you.

No matter how good your merchant radar is, it doesn't pick up periscopes 10 miles away in sea state 5. Will it pick up Zodiacs? I don't know and you didn't answer that questions.

You also didn't explain how your high freeboard container ship can out maneuver a Zodiac, not how it can keep the pirates from throwing over grappling hooks, nor how many crew you have on lookout for pirates.

In fact, you didn't really answer much of anything. You claim to have a lot of knowledge that I don't. Why not share some specifics?

My wife has family who are seamen in philippines.
First, whoever said guns are illegal in international waters is full of it.
Artillery is regulated(sort of) but not small arms.
The restrictions come from both the country of origin and the ports of call.
In the event they are sailing the Melaka straight(or the straight of Melacca) they are boned because that is in Indonesian waters and they don't allow any firearms on board.
Consequently that is by law imposed and the nature of narrows there with all the little islands a perfect place for piracy.
The sailors hate it.
All of her family speak ruefully of it.
None of them are real fond of Africa either.
There are ways to work it though.
If a ship were armed and the port country is restrictive they can radio the port ahead of time and surrender their arms to the local coastguard or navy or whatever port security exists.
Most shippers just refuse to deal with it.
They are pulling the old BS during training that if you are attacked to comply and the bad pirate will go away, you know, how they tell women here who are being raped to just relax do as told or they could get hurt.
These ship need a few rocket launchers and a couple of M2s. Then piracy would slow up a bit.

Radar is radar, there is no "merchant radar", the only difference is band ( i.e X band)

X band is designed to pick up and track small craft and is tunable for weather conditions, so yes I can track a Zodiac.

The more you talk the more evidence you provide that that you have zero knowledge of anything relating to this subject.

I am in the maritime business, shipping. I just moved into the management side of the business a little over a year ago, prior to that I was sailing on ships. So yes that's what I "claim". If you require more proof PM me your number and I will bring you down to one of our ships when they are in port and you can tell the crew you are there to investigate my "claims"

Like I said, you are welcome to come down to one of our ships for a tour and I then I would be happy to come back and explain why pretty much everything else you wrote in this thread is BS, including radar, grapplig hooks, "look outs" (we call watch standers and yes we do still use binos") this is all covered by STCW 95, "listening to the radios"(this task does not require your eyes), "so he yells"(actually we carry radios), "IFF tag" (these are not military ships and these are not war zones), this is 2008 we use AIS automated Identification System which displays on the ECDIS and is overlayed with radar from one of the units.

When I went fishing, my friends Furano could register seagulls, so I think Zodiacs and RIBs are no real problem for Civilians, less so for Military.

I was watching a History Channel documentary on modern day piracy. They were recounting examples of pirates boarding and looting ships and either killing the entire crew, or kidnapping the captain and first mate and killing the rest of the crew. The reporter was asking a shipping industry official "why don't you arm the crew" The official replied "Other than being illegal in international waters, having firearms on board the ship is not only irresponsible, but would only escalate the situation and increase the potential for violence" So let me get this straight. The pirates board the ship, take whatever they want, and execute the entire crew. How on earth could the situation possibly escalate from there? It would seem to me that an armed crew would have a 100% chance of a more positive outcome no matter how it went down. The pirates target these people because they know their unarmed. Stupid, stupid, stupid!!!

Maybe if the captain explains they're carrying only items from "Fair Trade" companies the pirates will be overwhelmed by a sense of guilt and leave them alone.
