As Gnehzekul pointed out, firearms are not illegal in international waters; they may illegal in some foreign ports or waters.
As to enforcement (not necessarily guns) the US Coast Guard may board any US flagged vessel at any time in international waters and even in foreign waters with permission of the country that controls those waters.

I think I posted this question before. Who here wants to chip in to buy a big shipping boat, arm it to the teeth, and go sailing for pirates?

Steve Zissou armed his crew with Glocks

...and they held their own against pirates.

Ok, so I had to look this up just to see... it's a fictitious movie (never saw it).

Anyone got any *real life* incidents to share?

a older gentelman at a shooting range i no longer go to( but the old guy was cool) was retired coast guard or navy or something, i forget exactly. he had a uneven head. bout a half an inch into his hairline he had a baldish patch and a huge dent. he wore a hat to hide it most of the time. he said that a 9mm hit his gun and bounced into his head at a glancing blow. he barely lived. anyway, shot by pirates was his story. i dont know if it was true or not. but it was a cool story.

but yes, the anti gun crap ran wild in that tv show.

These ships call on foreign ports and I do not know of any country that allows foreign Merchant Sailors to show up armed to a port.

Some government service vessel do carry armed personnel, MSC ships and hospital ships. They are run be contractors but work for the US governmemt

That would be Chief Mate , not First Mate.

I do not want to derail your thread, but has anyone noticed that most of the mosern pirate stories (i've read anyhow) are perp'd by armed Muslim priates?

I can't see why ANY ship would be on the high seas without its crew armed. I thought that was standard. No wonder these ships are easy pickins for these thugs.

Went sailing years ago... debated this question a bit and ultimately decided to bring firearms. Same issue: illegal to bring firearms into foreign ports, but essential for self defense. This was 1984, plenty of pirates/"military" out of El Salvador and Nicaragua. Got boarded early one morning by a bunch of heavily armed young soldiers on a Mexican patrol boat, looking for drugs. No drugs and they did not find the stashed firearms.
