Yeah, 10/22 is a great choice for both "intro" and "all-around-plinker." It can be customzied to all heck-and-back too.

For a handgun, others mentioned Ruger MKIII but another good option is Browning Buckmark.

I should clarify my earlier post...

1. You should let her choose from an array of guns.
2. Where will she be shooting? If rifle, are we talking bench shooting? That's why I recommended the Savage bolt action.
3. Are we definitely shopping for a rifle? Does she want a pistol?

Ruger 10/22 is good. Marlin 795 is a great choice if you plan on keeping it stock and not doing much modifying, maybe adding a scope.

Ruger Mark III or 22/45 is a great choice in a .22 handgun.

Definitely a .22 to start with, for price of ammo, fun, and learning curve.

After a while look into an M&P in 9mm, G17 & 19 are good as well.

Avoid small revolvers, as she will NOT enjoy shooting it and will NOT want to train with it in a formal course. Better to get a full size, practice, and possibly get a smaller, more concealable gun down the line.

Get a .22, or a full sized, (G19 is kind of a semi-compact) gun to start.

Small, concealable "do-it-all" one gun purchase...

that's the thinking of a newbie that will regret not following the advice of people that have been shooting and have owned multiple guns for years.

This basically sums up what I was about to post. I would say though, once the novelty of the .22 wears off, she may want to move up in size, and I'd recommend the Ruger LC9 or LCR, something she could train with and carry.

Pick something you like, in a small caliber. That way if things don't work out between you guys, you'll have something you'll use. Stay away from letting her pick a weapon. She'll select something PINK and expensive (Guaranteed!)

Her answer: 1911 There is a reason why I love her! She also likes the AR and 10/22 and she likes the XD9 sc... Wow I guess she likes my guns!

definitely +1000 on a 10/22. Good first gun for anyone. Good any gun for anyone. light recoil, reliable, accurate, cheap to feed, small, light, fun. Get the auto bolt release (something like $12, makes it easier to release the bolt from the locked-back position).

i think going straight to the 50 beowolf would scare her, i want to start with small caliber.

yeah she would be shooting from a bench, and yes definently a rifle, no pistols for now. I might get the Savage arms 93R17FV .17hmr heavy barrel. its on sale at turners for 229.98
