For handheld lights, I have a bunch of Surefire G2 Nitrolons, all but one have been/came with LED heads. The last one will be converted as soon as the LED unit and metal bezel arrive. I do have one legacy of my LE career; that would be a Mag Light (with an LED conversion) just in case I need to clobber something as well as light it up.

For pistol mounted lights, I favor the Insight M3/M3X; the M3X, when mounted on a Glock, can be equipped with a contoured switch that makes it easy to have light when you want it. It's a little harder to find good holsters that accommodate it then the TLR, though.

I have a bright blue pen light next to my gun. I would use it to light up the area where the person is, I would turn it on and throw it in the general area to light them up. I would not keep it in my hand, but use it to provide light where the person is standing. It will provide light for me to see and more than likely cause the person to look at the light which will give me that extra second or two to handle the situation.

For a light to keep next to a HD pistol I like only on/off types because I don't want to have to click through multiple light modes. I also like lights for this purpose to run on CR123 batteries because of their long shelf life.
My current HD light is a Streamlight Polytac HP. Very bright, lots of throw if I need it and its US made with a good replacement warranty through Streamlight. Affordable at around $45 or so online. Good luck.

Blue was the color of the light that someone gave me. The blue is a lot softer on my eyes and allows me to keep my night vision, which I am lucky to blessed with great natural night vision.

Use 2 x 16340 li-ion batteries.... big tail cap button gives you 750-ish OTF lumens via a momentary/On button. Smaller tail cap button gives you a 750-ish OTF lumen blinding strobe.

Small in size too. Costs around $90.
