To buy a complete rifle and ammo (for it), you're fine.

Some Bushmaster models are banned, and many like to stay away from the CA legal ones just to avoid confusion with those on the ban list. There are many fine rifles out there that meet this need.

        Enjoy.

There are many vendors here on CalGuns tat can set you up.

                      Buy this:

Smith and Wesson quality, Walmart price

I would have done the same for my first AR, but like anything you never find the deal until after you make your purchase.

You could look at the Smith and Wesson M&P 15 sporter for a good low cost AR

I'm 20 and I machined my own 80% 18 for long guns, and you might also consider building or even machining your own if you're into that. its a great experience and it helps you to understand how they work more completely.
My AR is 7.62x39, so that if/when we get invaded, I can shoot their ammo back at them!

For the money and your first plinker, the S&W isn't a bad choice for under $750. It will go bang when you pull the trigger.

Honestly though, I'd tell you to save up your money for another few months and get yourself something in the $1k range. You get a lot more gun for not a lot more $.

Also, I'd stay away from Bushmaster. They're notoriously over-gassed and over-priced for what they are/give you. Better quality can be had for the same or less $.
