Everyone thinks the M&P sport is the best thing on the planet it seems. I would love to see someone come up with an original answer to someones first AR besides saying M&P sport..

Honestly though, I'd tell you to save up your money for another few months and get yourself something in the $1k range. You get a lot more gun for not a lot more $.

Also, I'd stay away from Bushmaster. They're notoriously over-gassed and over-priced for what they are/give you. Better quality can be had for the same or less $.
Really? You know this because m4carbine.net told you so? How did you come up with this conclusion? Tell me whats wrong with my Bushmaster and I'll tell you if you're right or wrong.

Post a better rifle for less then?

And Tex, no. They are good rifles and well worth the price. That's why that's all he ever reads is ppl recommending them. Lol

TNP, is there something wrong with the S&W? I am seriously considering picking up 2 of them; one for each of my boys. (Ages 7 and 13)

Nothing wrong with it, just see that answer over and over its like people have an auto response when it comes to people asking about buying their first AR. You might not buy another AR again so why not buy a Colt. A Colt is what all AR's are judged by anyway. Nothing wrong with an M&P sport model though.

I've found Colt AR's to be over priced Del-Tons, basically (Quality wise, that is). They just don't have anything special compared to a sub $1K AR besides the Colt name on the side. But if you want one, more power to you.

What are mil-spec rifles built to then are they not built to Colt's technical specs?

They are built to military standards, not Colt's standards. People copy Colt because Colt sells to the militqry, and as such, theur specs when avaged out come to military specs. Big difference. Colt happened to have made the M-16 and M4 series of rifles for the ARMY, and they WERE the first contractor, but that's it. They aren't the holy grail of AR's, IN MY OPINION. If you like em. Buy em! They are still GREAT rifles, but just over priced in my book.

lol they are built to colt standards. Colt furnished a rifle that passed the military standard. Colt didn't build a rifle because the military set certain specs, Colt supplied a rifle that withstood military trials and thus became mil-spec.

If I remember correctly, Armalite, a division of Fairchild aircraft at the time, developed a rifle that passed military tests, and then the military hired Colt to make the rifles, because they could do it cheaper. So TECHNICALLY, Armalite is what everything should be held to.

Technically Armalite isn't the same company from the 60s..

The fact that you're such a staunch defender of Bushmaster actually tells me all I need to know. But if you insist on more "qualified" opinions, I can steer you towards experienced NSW/MARSOC armorers here in San Diego who will tell you exactly the same thing. I'm happy your Bushy works for you (really, I am), but they are not a benchmark of consistency and quality.

You might want to check your facts on that, and on several of the statements made in this thread in general. ArmaLite did not have the ability to produce rifles in large numbers, and eventually considered the AR-15 unmarketable, and subsequently sold the rights to Colt. AFAIK, this pre-dated military-adoption by a few years.

The military was trying them out when ArmaLite ws still in business. And you have to notice the reason for the sell off: Fairchild was getting rid of ArmaLite, hence the "unprofitability" of the AR format. They just didn't want to deal with firearms. And yes, they couldn't produce them at the time, but they said that they could if they could get a portion of the payment to tool up. Basically, it would take a bit longer and cost more for the military to buy them from ArmaLite, when Colt was right there, waiting. ArmaLite was the first to make them to specs. But the military wqsn't interested at the time. Give it a few years, and Colt own the rights, and the military wants in.
