I had 7 of them but just cleaned my room and tossed them all. You guys must go through guns like I go through socks. Anyways, what is the actual law? Do you HAVE to have a cable lock if you take the gun out the store in a locked container? I just bought a master lock and put it on my Gun case.My Guns:

There are many laws, both State and Federal. Handguns need a lock for the Feds, State requires a certified lock with a recent receipt or a safe. It is required that the firearm be securely packaged or in a locked container when it leaves the FFL.
Your Masterlock would most likely not be certified, although it means that you can use it for the locked case requirement, but that has nothing to do with the other lock requirements.Kemasa.

Last purchase at the LGS he asked me 'do you have a lock for this gun?'. I just stared at him with that "are you really stupid enough to ask me that?" look. After about 5 second he said "Yeah, Okay".
I have used a receipt book and stapled a business card to it and no one has ever called when I loan/donate a lock. A lot goes to the relationship with the store...Comment

But why don't gun stores take the safe number anymore? I really don't think there has been a ruling to change that....
LGS are all over the map, some allow the stock original lock, some allow you to use a safe number, most just screw you for $6 to $15 for a freaking NEW lock. And yes, there of course is that 30 day with receipt thing which I WILL try your suggestion to have them write down that they won't take a hand written receipt....
A couple of gun shops have a big bucket of locks, throw yours in and buy one back for $1.. That's GUN FRIENDLY.

Yes, there was a change. The Feds passed a law, but has failed to properly document it as required. This is with respect to handguns only. The BATF lawyer said that the FFL has to provide the lock or safe, no one else.
The laws are unclear. Just the safe affidavit is not acceptable for a handgun due to the Federal requirement that a lock be provided (it is really not clear of who actually has to provide the lock based on my reading of the law).
