Interesting thread. I did learn a new term: Hoplophobia is defined as the "fear of weapons" and as the "fear of armed citizens".

Sounds like the fear of Hop-a-long Cassidy. Maybe that's where it came from?
    Hop-a-long had a gun.

Post WWII lesson: Communists killed all the opposing males in the family...then came and confiscated all the guns in the home.

        Liberals are liberal first.

I would add a #11: The vicious smear that has equated the NRA with racism; the media portrayal of gun-owners being inbred hicks.

I think that there are a lot of good people out there that unfortunately believe that private gun-ownership is dangerous and adds to crime. We need to flog the statistics that show time and time again that armed citizens reduce violent crime.

I plan to answer any statistic about guns with the 2 million+ defensive uses per year. Any other response is allowing the antis to frame the argument.

Wife is Jewish. She used to believe guns brought trouble. Now she believes guns keep trouble away, especially after needing one.

I clicked expecting a racist article about how guns actually cost money.... pleasantly surprised it is a pretty good article. Applies to more than just Jews for the most part.

I read the article and couldn't help but think that the author really didn't do any research but put together a bunch of generalizations.

A research paper would be more interesting. Something that included polling and interviews to really assess the status of Jewish gun ownership and opinions.

My jewish buddy bought a gun, but does not shoot it because ammo is too expensive.

I disagree with assertion that the author didnt do any research. Actually let me clarify, he probably didnt, beyond his own experience and a decade or two of JFPO lobbying and rabble rousing, but its not that type of article. I imagine the author has thought long and hard about this issue. Its calculated JFPO propaganda or an Op Ed or whatever you want to call it, not a research paper. Everyone understands his point though, and we all know the type of people he is describing.

Its a 1960s era Jeff Cooper term. It comes from the Greek word for arms 'Hoplon'. And no, its not in the DSM..... yet.

Firearms authority and writer Colonel Jeff Cooper coined the word in 1962[7] to describe a "mental disturbance characterized by irrational aversion to weapons."[8] Although not a mental health professional, Cooper employed the term as an alternative to slang terms, stating: "We read of 'gun grabbers' and 'anti-gun nuts' but these slang terms do not [explain this behavior]." Cooper attributed this behavior to an irrational fear of firearms and other forms of weaponry. He stated that "the most common manifestation of hoplophobia is the idea that instruments possess a will of their own, apart from that of their user."

Jewish people I know all have guns. They are not gun nutts and they don't have a huge arsenal but they are armed with at least a handgun and a shotgun
