I could probably get by with six.
Pistols: (2 or 3)
one semi autos in my favorite caliber
one semi auto in 22 LR to practice more
nice to have would be a back up of centerfire choice in case first one is broken or used to defend myself.
Shotguns: (1 or 2)
one pump though an identical back would be nice
Rifles: Three
Bolt or lever action 308 for hunting
Semi auto 308
22 LR rifle
This would cover most of my needs. Should I ever go on a dangrous game hunt then I would get a bigger rifle but not till then.RIP Louis Awerbuck. I miss you and your training.Comment

No one really "Needs" a gun . . . but like most things in life we "Want" rather than need.
I have to admit I don't find the "need" for a compact. I don't have a LTC so no need. Post SHTF I won't "need" a compact either.
I've been thinking how many "calibers" do I need?? I've been under the "prepper" philosophy of having 2 of each for redundacy.
The problem is I've already gone over my personal philosophy of 4 calibers max. Now I'm at 5 calibers of ammo to stock.
.22LR - M&P 15-22 (looking for a 10/22)
9mm - XD9 (2 of them)
12ga - Remington 870 (2 of them)
.223 - DDM4 V5 (1 of them and looking for another DDM4)
.45 - Operator MC (this was defenitely a "Want" not a "Need" purchase)
