Plugs or muffs?

Just wondering what most people use for ear protection. I tend to go with plugs. Just because when I wear muffs and shoot rifles, they tend to get in the way. What say you?

Both usually, or just plugs, but never just muffs since they are usually a lower NR rating.

It depends. I always use top notch (NRR 26) low profile electronic muffs but if I don't need to hear someone speaking (instructors etc) I wear plugs under the muffs.

Decibels are expressed on a logarithmic scale, so an increase in the hearing protection of 10 Db is a doubling of protection. While an increase of hearing protection from 33 Db to 38 Db is not a full doubling of protection, it is a significant increase.

Agreed. Plus and muffs together are better than just one or the other alone.


I just didn't want someone to think that using both allowed you to add both NRR together, when clearly, that is not the case.

I from time to time take for granted some of the training I receive at work and just assume that others receive the same training and know what I know. I have learned that others aren't as fortunate to receive the level of training I do and may not be aware of all the risks involved. So the goal of my post was more of a public service announcement for those that didn't know. That is all.

Ear Valves only

Been shooting for 40 years but only use ear valve baffle type plugs, which allows normal conversation, but prevents harmful decibel levels passing. Use these in all shooting environments including indoors, and still have perfect hearing. Originally they were sold under the Norton Sonic II brand/model label, nowadays, they are called North Sonic II Ear Valves, also Silencio has a similar baffle type ear valves.
