Belt fed anything with 10 rounds is pointless. How many Californians owned feed links before the ban? Probably not enough to make it worthwhile.

I have played with a genuine Shrike. They ACTUALLY exist. Seriously.

Anyways, as an upper, they are legal in CA. Period. Parts is parts.

To legally install one on a lower in CA you would either have to make the firearm featureless, or install some kind of lock that would prevent you from opening the top cover without the use of a tool to "detach" the magazine (read: belt).

Then of course you would also require a bullet button on the lower since it can still accept and fire from AR magazines.

Don't use belts or magazines above 10rd's or you have committed a felony.

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

I own about a 1000 5.56x45mm links and several 200 round SAW drums.
Left overs from the 90s, when the Gov let me play with M-249s.
They just sit in my garage, rusting away.

i have yet to actually play with a shrike (something that will change very soon), so tell me CHS, what did you like about it? what did you not like about it? would you buy one for a CA lower if it were priced between $1200 and $1500? would you think there is enough of a market for something like a shrike in CA to actually make it worth my while to fit it with some sort of locking device (requiring a "tool") so it can be used on a lower with "evil features".

Actually if you had the linked ammo before 2000, you could have as many linked together as you want as long as you are featureless.

then that would make the browning 1919 illegal, or the Browning Ma deuce illegal. It is 100% legal, it is the linked ammo that count as the magazine

I believe if you mounted it and went with spade grips you'd get around the pesky AW restrictions...no longer a rifle since it's not fired from the shoulder. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

The Ma Duece and the 1919 are neither "semiautomatic, centerfire RIFLES", nor "semiautomatic, centerfire PISTOLS".

30515. (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, "assault weapon" also means any of the following:
..(1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
....(A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon.
                      ....(B) A thumbhole stock.
....(C) A folding or telescoping stock.
....(D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
                      ....(E) A flash suppressor.
                      ....(F) A forward pistol grip.
..(2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
..(3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length of less than 30 inches.
..(4) A semiautomatic pistol that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
....(A) A threaded barrel, capable of accepting a flash suppressor, forward handgrip, or silencer.
                      ....(B) A second handgrip.
....(C) A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel that allows the bearer to fire the weapon without burning the bearer's hand, except a slide that encloses the barrel.
....(D) The capacity to accept a detachable magazine at some location outside of the pistol grip.
..(5) A semiautomatic pistol with a fixed magazine that has the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
..(6) A semiautomatic shotgun that has both of the following:
....(A) A folding or telescoping stock.
....(B) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon, thumbhole stock, or vertical handgrip.
..(7) A semiautomatic shotgun that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine.
..(8) Any shotgun with a revolving cylinder.

If you haven't seen it with your own eyes,
or heard it with your own ears,
don't make it up with your small mind,

What I liked about it was on a FA lower, it turns the AR platform into a poor-mans SAW.

I don't know if I would ever be interested in one on a semi-auto lower. Then again, maybe for "fun" I would get one.

Why do you think you'll be able to get one for $1200-$1500? Those things have been vaporware for over ten years. While a couple here and there have leaked out to buyers, the backlog is huge. I doubt we'll ever see them produced in enough quantity to actually get them at that price.

the reason why they are vaporware is because Ares is a sh*tty company. and from what i can tell right now they discontinued the shrike leaving hundred of customers high and dry. i cant seem to get in contact with anybody at Ares defense. i am working with a guy right now who wants to create a shrike like upper. He has no desire to make a CA legal version, but im trying to prove that there could be a market here, and would only require us to use a "bullet button" like device on the upper to be able to use it with "evil features".

basically we are making a new "shrike", its still on the drawing board at the moment but we should have a working prototype in the next 6 months, after thorough testing it might be market ready in a year+

if i can prove to my friend that there is a market for this upper here in CA im willing to bet that he would make a CA version with a locking device, for me to distribute here. the price range that i quoted is his target range for when it hits the market, however no price will be set until we know how much these things are going to cost to build.

                                It's still just a part.

It's inherently CA legal. Your guy doesn't need to make any changes at all.
