Embeded conductive fabric in any clothing will almost compleatly eliminate the effects of a tazer, the new tacticool fabrics that they come up with are ALMOST as effective as sewing copper window screen into a jacket lining.

Electricity takes the path of least resistance, and your body is a very poor conductor compared to metal mesh.

Pepper spray works great... if you lock it down on spray and shove it in the perp's throat.

I have both pepper spray and a Taser available for use. I also have a CCW and suitable sidearm available.

I have been involved in various scenarios, both working and non-work in which all of the options listed above were appropriate. You see, when all you have is a hammer (a gun), every problem looks like a nail.

I've yet to taze somebody, but I have made it apparent I had one ready for use. The problem I see with the Taser is that the probe spread makes it questionable you can score 2 hits at more than 7 yards. Both probes must hit in order to shock the target. My ROE for the Taser is less than 5 yards. The interesting thing about the civilian Taser is the initial 30-second jolt as opposed to the LE 5-second initial shock. A 30-second ride on a Taser will put anybody down, and they will stay down for awhile. Just put the Taser down and run like hell. When safe, call the cops and hope for the best. Fax a copy of the Police report to Taser International and you get a new one. Can't beat that!

If I have to Taze somebody at work, I'll cuff him up and make a citizen's arrest. Another nice thing about the civilian Taser is you can keep juicing the bad guy until the batteries go dead. You turn the arrestee over to the cops with probes attached. They will arrange getting the probes out. They will probably take your Taser as well, but that's cool. If you are right it doesn't matter, it will be replaced.

Pepper spray is a shoot-and-scoot deal. I would hesitate to spray a suspect I was going to arrest since you almost always get the OC on you as well. If I was accosted while not working, and I had a clear getaway path, I'd hose a perp down and split. Use the whole damn can and toss it as you leave.

Hmm.. if they wanted to defeat the conductive clothing, you'd simply make most of the probes non-conductive, and have the TIP conductive. If your probes are long enough, the copper mesh will be contacting the non-conductive plastic lining.

As for what to do if/when tasing a bad guy? If you really needed to, you could always give 'em a few swift kicks

When you buy a Taser, you get a reactive target to test the thing with. It is aluminum foil-like and arcs when you shoot it. The cartridges are $50 a pop, but I had to test it out. I stapled the target to my wooden fence in my backyard and gave it a go from about 10 feet, using the laser to aim center mass on the silhouette.

The probes hit about 2 feet apart at that short distance. Everything worked quite well and the light show was impressive.

The barbed probes sunk into the wooden fence about a quarter inch and were rather difficult to remove. I think they would penetrate all but the thickest clothing.

If you did shoot the cartridge and clothing stops the probes, or stopped the current for some reason, you can still use the contact stun feature, even without discarding the cartridge. Certainly a last ditch, but an option nonetheless.

Some of you guys have hit the mark with pepper spray.

If im with a principal and cannot carry my firearm, i carry pepper spray. My objective is to spray and scoot and move/get/escape with my principal to safety. In my line of work im not going to go hands on and make a citizens arrest. My objective is to get my principal to safety period.

Pepper spray also gives one sa ome safety zone as far as keeping a safe distance where as a knife or martial arts puts one in cqb. I also carry a knife but again, cqb issues and not being able to watch my principal.

Same thing if im out on the town with the wife or friends. I spray and scoot period.

Of course a gun is always best but its a shame that we cant all carry one at all times.

While almost nobody deserves to be shot down in the middle of the street, I can honestly say this:
"Don't bring hot sauce to a gunfight."
Every day I walk around I think about how vulnerable I am. I too live in LA though, so unless I get a job as a highly paid actor, jeweler, or politician for the Democratic Party, I'm not getting a CCW anytime soon.

                      +1

I am a huge fan of the Taser if you can not CCW because of CLEO politics. Check out any You-Tube video for Taser demos, the new Tasers stop most people in their tracks. If you only hit with one probe, you can still strike the attacker with the taser using the stun feature and stop him. The taser has limitations (range, thick clothing) but once it deploys, it works so well.

My experience with pepper spray is it just pisses off the sray-ee and will probably enrage them and start a hands-on fight (Which is maybe why the guy shot the other guy). It will take 20+ seconds for the pepper spray to start to penetrate the skin and start the burning effect to make the spray-ee stop hostilities. You have to remember with chemical agents, you may end up going hands on after the spray and will fight with the spray on you as well as the bad guy.
