I have been "Tazed" by the most recent generation Tazer device and been pepper sprayed. The Tazer was more immediately debilitating (completely incapacitated while the current was on) but I would MUCH rather be Tazed than pepper sprayed because of the lasting (hours) effect of the pepper spray. The Tazer is easily accurate and effective at distances to about 15 feet based on my firsthand observations of it in use on a subject in a protective suit.

    Either way, BRING A GUN.

That being said, if you miss, you're screwed. (now you have a stun gun- good luck!). Drawing time would be the same as with a firearm.

+1 The taser really works well, and while the barbs are in the subject you can allways cycle it again Many people who have been tasered really do not want to be tased again, and voluntary comply.

IMO Pepper spray is really suited for non-human-animals, but I wouldn't want to deploy it unless I could escalate the defense options if required. But that arguement also applies to the taser...so this story is another example of why we need shall issue CCW.

Pretty sure if you did this you'ld be in the pen for a while.

Umm, you mean fuming nitric in a pressurized container? Not something I'd want on my person every day. Wouldn't even want to be in the same room with it every day without the decon shower nearby. Accidental pepperspray I can handle.

I'll bring everything I can to a gunfight, including spray and knives, but they aren't a substitute for a gun for sure. (yes my pockets bulge and maybe I'm happy to see you)

            Then what?

This is something I've always wondered about carrying a taser for self defense. Say baggy-pants comes up and offers to rob you, and you whip out your taser and drop him. Now what? You've used your one shot and now you're attached to him by the wires. Do you pull the wires out and run, with baggy-pants hot on your tail as soon as you disconnect the wires? Or do you whip out your cell phone with the other hand and stand there waiting for the cops to arrive, or baggy's homies to come and shoot you in the back, whichever comes first?

Leave the otherwise useless taser still attached and run.

That's the same as pulling out the wires. Dude's gonna be up and after you the moment he realizes you can no longer shock him.

Taser Intl., the maker of tasers, will replace your "civilian" taser, free of charge, if it is used. The "civilian" model provides a 30 second burst instead of the 5 seconds in the LEO model. Their suggestion is that you tase the bad guy, put the taser on the ground, and run, run, run. When you provide them with a police report number, they give you a new taser (if the other one disappears).

However, if you can get a CCW, I would much rather have that.

I thought the taser had a 10 or 30 second cycle where it zaps (during which it would be a great idea to get out of dodge)

Edit: Whoops, didn't see eta's post

I want my LEO taser to have a 30 second cycle. That way, when one of you guys doesn't produce your license quickly enough, I can zap you, put down the taser, and watch you flop like a fish (while drinking coffee and eating my jelly doughnut, of course).

I'll see your taser and raise you a nice synthetic jacket:

I didn't observe any smilies on either of your posts, so I was wondering if you could explain the self defense purposes of weaponized nitric acid?

The thing about all chemical agents is they are not selective, they cover the area, which means other people may be effected by them.

I have difficultly understanding how this would do anything except PC 203, 205 and 206 the attacker. I would rather have shall issue CCW in CA, and have folks understand pepper spray is just one level of force that can be used in our self defense tool kit (IMO used on an obviously un-armed attacker or dog/fox/wolf).
