LOS ANGELES -- A 44-year-old man who appeared to have been trying to defend himself with pepper spray was fatally shot early Wednesday during a possible robbery attempt near the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles, authorities said.
The shooting happened on South Lucerne Boulevard, between Wilshire Boulevard and West Eighth Street, said Lt. Victor Davalos of the Los Angeles Police Department's Wilshire Station.
Police received reports at about 12:35 a.m. of a man lying in the middle of the street, Davalos said, and discovered the man dead from gunshot wounds.
The victim's name was not immediately released.
Police said Wednesday afternoon they believe robbery or a verbal dispute was the motive for the killing.
They want to speak with two motorists who drove by after the gunfire and may have seen something. One was driving a Ford F-150 pickup truck and the other a Honda passenger car.
Police have few leads, Davalos said, adding that the slaying did not appear to be gang- or narcotics-related.
The victim may have been trying to defend himself because pepper spray was found near his body, Davalos said.
Alex Delgadillo, a motorcyclist who saw the victim's body in the middle of the street and called police, told a camera crew that "we came around the corner and thought the victim was drunk."
"We turned around and saw he didn't respond. It turned out he wasn't breathing or anything," Delgadillo said, adding that the man's "fists were clenched."
Anyone with information was asked to call detectives John Shafia or Victor Arellano of the LAPD's Wilshire Division at 213-473-0446. On weekends or evenings, call 877-519-3855.
