    Which muffs for hearing protection?

I have always used plugs as I always shoot rifles outdoor but am purchasing a handgun within the next two weeks and plan to buy some muffs.

Are electric muffs that much better than normal ones? How much do they cost and what are some brands to look at? Thanks.

Good to know, as I want these for the indoor range.

      Peltor tactical 6S.
      Electronic muffs are WAY better.
With the volume turned up, you actually hear things that you would not hear with bare ears.
When the shot goes off, it cuts out the loud noise.
This will not be as helpful on indoor ranges with other people shooting.

If you shoot alone and someone walks up behind you, you will hear their feet shuffling on the ground.
In the hunting stand, you hear leaves crunching from a deer walking down a game trail.
People don't talk about hearing protection while hunting because you want to hear everything around you.
Another advantage of muffs in the field is that they keep your ears warm.

Do you believe that electronic muffs are worse for indoor ranges over regular muffs? I have plenty of in earplugs but because of the handgun purchase I am now going to get a membership at an indoor handgun range, which is why I am looking for muffs to double up with the earplugs if needed.

I do not think that I will use the muffs outdoor as I would think they would get in the way when shooting the rifles.

I use Silencio 31 Muffs, and have had them for several years. They're not very expensive, and they seem to do the job quite well! I have worn them while shooting rifles and I find that they don't get in the way... now that being said, I'd imagine that most people WOULD have a problem with muffs, especially ones as bulky as the Silencio 31 are... Personally, I like to double up muffs + plugs whenever I can.

I certainly like them. However, folks that have problems with standard muffs getting in the way might do better with some kind of a slimline muff. I have also yet to try electronic muffs, but folks that I've talked to absolutely swear by them. Remember, you can always wear plugs even under electronic muffs....

Since I always shoot outside, sometimes for hours at a time, with anything from 9mm to BMG, I choose to double up: EAR plugs (or similar) and muffs. I get annual hearing tests through my employer as part of yearly physicals, so I cannot afford to be negligent when it comes to protecting my ears.

Now if I can just remember to plug-up when I ride...

What about for precision rifle (benchrest) shooting? I have custom earplugs, but I like to double-up with muffs.

                  Pretty cheap too.

Let us know how you like them. I might get a set based on the feedback as well.

Will do, I went ahead and ordered the set last night. I will tell how I like them however I cannot compare to another electric set as I have never used any before.

Is this because it cuts out sound constantly with the barrage of gun shots? Basically, will my ears be protected with electronic muffs in an indoor range?

Yes, you just won't be able to hear normally between shots if there is no pause between shots.

What are the best electronic muffs out there? What are the best under $100?
