Which muffs for hearing protection?

Remember that electronic muffs are no better than their base NRR rating. The electronics only help you hear softer sounds, they don't help reduce loud sounds. Not many electronic muffs are rated over NRR 22 or so, and that's just not enough for me, especially indoors or at outdoor ranges with close stall roof and walls.

I like a really high NRR, and always use Peltor Ultimate 10s, with an NRR of 29 and a soft, comfortable earcup seal. The problem with high NRR muffs is that they're bulky and can get in the way when shooting long guns. In that case, I like to use slim muffs and earplugs. A good seal around your shooting glasses is critical, and a poor seal can let a lot of noise in even on muffs with a good rating. You can buy gel cups for some Peltor and Sordin muffs.

Some people say the total NRR rating can be misleading, as it's an average over a range of sounds, and muffs like the highly regarded (and expensive) Nordin Supreme Pro are effective, while only having an NRR of 18. I haven't used them, so I can't speak to that.

I'm pretty protective of my hearing, and don't like to take chances. I threw out all my old mediocre muffs.\

Well I ordered them Sunday night and they came in yesterday afternoon. As stated earlier I have never used electric ear muffs before. However, based on my first experience with a pair, WOW!, you can hear so much with these! These would be perfect for hunting. I am not sure about the indoor range yet though, a new review will come when I can find the P226 I searching for (though 10 of my mags came in today ).
These come with a plugin for your mp3 player which is pretty nifty as you can shoot while listening to music.

I had both of my roommates test them here in the apartment (both w/o electric muff experience also) and they both love them too. One was skeptical about it before they came thinking they would sound too tinny or would not work good for the price but after testing them, he quickly learned he was wrong. Both are now planning to order them also.

I have per blacklisted's recommendation, a set of Peltor 7s coming in.

I may also get a low-profile set too for cheeking up to non-AR guns.

I always travel with 2-3 plain headsets anyway to take guests shooting - saves remembering to pack other things when I pick up the guns& ammo.

I have always used plugs as I always shoot rifles outdoor but am purchasing a handgun within the next two weeks and plan to buy some muffs.

Are electric muffs that much better than normal ones? How much do they cost and what are some brands to look at? Thanks.

Electronic muffs are not better than normal ones regarding noise suppression. However, they do allow you to hear conversations without having to shout. They range in cost from $30 to $200+. I own a pair of Peltor 6S (about $60) and I find that I prefer my 32dB regular muffs ($30).

For shooting indoors, it is good to have both plugs and muffs.

I ordered these as well and they came in fast. I was very impressed with them but haven't had a chance to take them out yet. I would recommend them right now, especially for the price.

I have a pair of pro-ears dimension 2s. Yeah they are expensive, but they are comfy, work well, and, best of all, have jacks to hook up to a mp3 player.

I've spent more time using them for household tasks than I have for shooting. When you are spending the day weed-eating, grinding, jackhammering, or sitting behind a two-stroke, it's nice to have protection and tunes together.
