Except for this one guy I took shooting with me, who shoot like 100 rounds through my ak. But he payed for the ammo.
    I think I might now him. He shot 80 7.62X39 and 8 of .30-06

the rule was "if you could accurately shoot the 8mm, steel butt plated, m24/47 mauser; 36rounds in under 3min - rest of the day is on me"

most of my friends decided the bet was sour around the 25th round when their shoulder started showing subdermal trauma

If it was becoming that much of an issue go to the range without them. You can always say "enough is enough" without being a d-bag about it.

First time shooters shoot for free. After that you better be kicking down for ammo - bring your own or buy at the range.

Most of my friends don't shoot though only one friend of mine goes each and every time and we split the reloading supplies and work down the middle.

Are you sure they are friends?

The friends I shoot with are welcome to as much ammo as I bring. If they are my friends, I enjoy their company, and want to shoot with them. The cost of the ammo (.22LR, .38 Special, and 9mm) is mostly noise to me. I do limit them on the .357 Magnum loads (but that is self-limiting to us, anyway).

Any friends that are going for the first time , I usually tell them ahead of time to find that particular ammo and go to the places that have em(i.e. walmart/big5/turners etc.) and if they didn't bring enough or couldn't find it, i let them shoot some of mine for free, no hassle. Once they come back for some more, I always call them ahead of time to make sure they bought the ammo, and most of them usually do so no problems there.

Close friends like my best friends and some family, can shoot as much as they want, as they let me do the same with their guns and ammo.

Two things happened, and I'm not sure which is more valuable:

Once, I took three newbies out and at the end of the session, they ponied up $75 to help defray expenses.

The other time, I took a friend out and while he didn't pay for the ammo, he helped clean the guns afterwards.

I always pay for the ammo for new people, but it's difficult for me to charge the females if they want to shoot for the 2nd, 3rd or 4th time with me.

i went several times with friends to the range and i wasnt able to purchase ammo (under 21) so what i would do it when we go to the range, depending on how much i shoot i estimate how much i shot and add another $10-$15 and pay them back after finishing up the day of shooting...

yeah newbs are newbs but then again is doesnt dismiss them them from being respectful and mindful of the host(s) who brought you with them to enjoy the day...

If it doesn't cost anything how do you appreciate its value?

If I tell people I'll bring the guns and ammo then I fully expect to provide it.

Otherwise most of my buddies will figure some way of squaring up even if it isn't ammo like buying lunch or paying the range rental or gas. The really weird thing is that they do this without being asked or told...who would have thunk?

                              You just need better friends.

I always furnish the ammo. Sometimes they offer to pay most do not. Many times others shoot my firearms and ammo more than I do. Just the way it is. There is no ammo selling at my range. Sometimes I have to limit the amout a person can shoot due to cost. I let others shoot everything from 22RF/204/223 up to 338mag and 50bmg.
I am a bit of a pushover. Most of the time they do not have anything I do not already own so there is little reason to shoot theirs if you brought a gun.

First timers should always get free ammo to help bring them into the sport. We need more people shooting and voting correctly.
