Dealers need a copy of a receipt showing the purchase of a lock. Cash registers don't do "sales" for less than $0.01.

But they could be trying to pad their bank account, why for every 1000 guns they sell they're pocketing another $10 bucks.

      +1 on .01

I think this store's policy on PPT locks rocks! It's the ONLY thing I liked about this multi-location business. It's their other business practices that has me spending my dollars elsewhere. I've been caught w/o a lock on longer distance PPTs and it's usually those places that sell the locks for $20+ (I once had to pay $34.95 for some ultra fancy over priced lock because all the $10 ones were "out of stock") and it's usually those places that have a no return policy on said locks. Safe affidavit depends on city/county and that is a thing of beauty there. So at the end of the day, the .01 lock game is a good thing, after all, we're all responsible owners and know how to safely store these things at home.

are you f-ing telling me you want to file suit over a f-ing penny?

the shop should have charged you an extra $10 for a lock even if you had your own and now you are pissed because they found a way to both satisfy the law and not cause a customer extra money...

I certainly wouldn't do it on a contingency fee basis. I'd charge my hourly rate, $500.00/hour, plus expenses and would need a $10,000 retainer up front.

In other words, it would be a colossal waste of a lawyer's time and your money.

I don't think it's a liberal thing, just a very litigious mentality. Kinda like slamming your brakes often hoping for someone to rear end you, aiming for the wet spot in the floor of a store, etc etc.....

Anyways, I would love to know the FFL I would drive several hours to make a purchase from some folks who are not trying to rip people off for a .75 cent lock and charging $10 for it (for something that never gets used)!

@707electrician, been hearing rumors that safety locks by child life are starting to run out from various forums, but if you go to their website they still are accepting applications for free locks. I think the LEO agencies are just getting lazy. Mine has boxes and boxes behind the counter and still gives them out free.

I got nailed $19.95 each for two locks at a very high end store on two PPTs. For the same lock you can buy at Walmart for around $5 or less each.
This....though you apparently don't appreciate it. Personally I wish every PPT I've done was handled this way, I'm tired of having to pay the $5 to $20 extra per transaction for a useless lock, just to meet a ridiculous legal requirement.

You can't supply your own lock...so this is a clever way to say "F-U" to a stupid law and save YOU some money.

And mentioning it on a public forum is a great way to get this shop busted by ATF/DOJ.

The OP is confused, very confused.

The gun shop sold you a lock for $10.00, then seeing you didn't need the lock other than to comply with CA law, bought it back from you for $9.99. That penny went into covering the labor and administrative costs of complying with the stupid law.

Here's what the OP should do next time. Go to another place and buy a CA-approved gun lock for $10 and walk in to the gun store in question with your receipt for the new lock. He can pick up his gun without paying the penny. Problem solved.

It sounds to me like the shop was doing you a favor(and possibly getting themselves in hot water) by not actually making you buy a lock. And I highly doubt that this shop is scamming on gun locks to get rich.

My suggestion for you, and I'm sure there are many others that feel this way, is to quit being such a huge P#ssy!

Sorry for the foul language but come on how can any of you take this guy seriously.

CA gun owners......... the place is doing you a favor by only charging you $0.01 for a CA lock. i get hit up $12.00 for a lock every time i get a new gun. relax and if you really want that 0.01 go home and look under your bed.

One issue is that the shop is violating the law if they are claiming that there was a lock with the firearm, but really isn't. That is going to get them in trouble sooner or later. There is a Federal law regarding locks, which has not been published, as required, and a CA law which requires a certified lock or that the person have a safe or certified lock box. This is a criminal issue, not a civil issue though.

With respect to being charged $.01 and not getting the lock, once you left the store it is up to you to prove that you did not actually get the lock. You should have said something at the time, if it was important to you. At this point in time you can't prove that you did not actually get the lock. The shop, while being stupid, is trying to reduce your costs and think that they are helping you, while putting themselves at risk.

Last long gun I bought, the shop charged me a penny AND gave me a lock. It didn't fit the action, but it was CA approved!
