    Keeping Magazines loaded good/bad?

Is it okay to have magazines loaded up and ready? Does it cause wear or tear on the magazine or any of its parts? Are there differences for hi-caps like drums and 10 rounders? I've HEARD that drums need to have a spring released and wonder if the same applies to all magazines.

No. There are a few schools of thought on this as well as lots of FUD, but the best information I've heard/read is that keeping a mag fully loaded does nothing to the spring, and does less from a mechanical standpoint that constantly loading and unloading a mag.

it's fine. keep them loaded. modern magazine springs don't get worn our from being compressed. I have magazines that have been loaded for years and they work just fine.

far as functionality goes, oil can dry up inside em and you can have a bind. i get that alot with the wax coated 22lr for my ruger standard pistol. oil dries out and the wax causes friction. so i oil my mags before every range trip.

anything big should be pretty hard to get stuck.

wd40 turns to varnish and that will lock up a magazine pretty good over enough time. varnishes up the inside of guns too, if its there long enough. the good news is that wd40 melts its own varnish over a day or two, so its its own cure.

i keep one mag loaded full and two others loaded only up to 5. if someone breaks in, so i limit myself when shooting someone.

i heard you cant shoot a guy more than 3 or 5 rounds or its attempted murder. im not sure.

Deadly force is justifiable as long as the person is an imminent unlawful deadly threat to you or someone else. You must truly fear of death or GBI.

Number of rounds fired does not represent any type of murder.

I think there might be some sort of law against mutilating a corpse if you get really carried away (dump 5 beta mags into the perp or so)

but you do what you gotta do.

As far as mags go... on polymer mags i wouldn't sugest it as the pressure on the feed lips can hurt them over time, especially on thermoplast polymers. the P-Mag's with the little strain relieving lip protectors are awesome and can be stored loaded indeffinitly.

metal mags don't care so long as you dont spend all day loading them and unloading them on the couch.

Granted I carry my gun to work 4 - 5 days a week, so when I'm home I keep the mags loaded, but when I'm off work, I empty 2 of the 3 mags, and only keep 1 loaded.

                      I don't fully load my mags though, I only put 9rds in a 10rd mag. 27rds in a 30rd mag.

This practice is causing more wear on your mags than keeping them loaded would. Cycling the mags by loading/ unloading them is harder on the springs than leaving them loaded would.

Download by one round if it's making you lose sleep; the reduction in strain on the spring is geometrically lessened; I forget the exact formulae that I saw once. I wouldn't worry about it.

From a conversation with a SJPD MERGE Team officer, regarding this very subject: "If the sh*t ever truly hits the fan and the investigating officers asks 'why did you shoot the perp 30 time with your MP5?' The answer is: 'Because that's all the magazine held.'"

Recently, there was an incident in which a man had to defend his home from four active shooters. He was hit once and was able to get into his safe. There was an AR in the safe, but guess what? No loaded mags. So instead he had to face four people shooting at his house with a 9mm. When you are dripping blood on the floor is not a good time to wish you had taken one minute of your life to load at least one mag for your bad boy.

So I can shoot someone once or twice and its not attempted murder?
